Chapter 674: The Incompetent
?
Lily's POV:
Every time someone came, they would take someone away. I never saw them return.
At a certain point, when more people came, they would no longer come empty-handed. Instead, they would bring back the bodies of those who had been taken away.
They were just like the first victim I saw. Their faces were pale, and their expressions were terrified, but they had no injuries. They died in an extraordinary way.
The people at the Lily of the Valley said, "The battery is dead." Obviously, these victims were treated as the 'battery' of some device and died of exhaustion.
Along with them was a lily of the valley I was familiar with. It was the thing that took lives.
I also understood that I was now in the real broadcast station. The Lily of the Valley had set up a fake space outside of it. They could only travel between the two spaces with a lily of the valley.
The frequent entry also meant that the rescue team had arrived, and the Lily of the Valley had already confronted them.
Whenever I saw someone covered in blood, my heart sank a little. Did someone die?
But I was locked up here and knew nothing.
When Karter appeared again, he seemed in a good mood. "I didn't expect you werewolves to have such courage. You'd rather die than live in shame. But it doesn't matter. In any case, the only way to enter is through the key. Even if you struggle now, it's all in vain.
"But before that, I have to give them a little push." He suddenly leaned closer to me and laughed. "The candy you left outside must be very important, right? Otherwise, you wouldn't have used it as a sign that you were here. Unfortunately, before you were brought to me, the person guarding you had already seen your little tricks."
All the familiar people knew my agreement with Heller about collecting candies. As Karter said, I left that candy to signal the rescue personnel that I was there. But now, it seemed that Karter had used it as bait.
"I copied a few identical candies and personally delivered the key to them." Karter seemed to find it funny and couldn't help but laugh." What do you think he'll do? If they don't pay any price, then the price will be you!"
I was shocked. "What nonsense are you talking about?"
All of Kate's emotions suddenly disappeared without a trace. He stared at me and said expressionlessly, "They must have come here. If they don't use the key, I must help them." The key.
I looked at the flower branch wrapped in a handkerchief in his chest pocket and felt a chill run down my spine.
He wanted to lure the rescue team into the real space of the station, and for that, he was willing to sacrifice my life.
I was useless to him because I'd already lured his target here.
I suddenly felt everything was ridiculous at this moment of life and death. If he was in a hurry to see the target, why would he set up a double space? Couldn't he just open the door to welcome guests?
That was what I thought and asked.
Unexpectedly, Karter shook his head repeatedly and said in disapproval, "That won't do. If we do that, everything will be too boring! Today is an important day. If I can't do it perfectly, how could I satisfy the great man?"
At this moment, I once again felt that I could not communicate with this person at all.
So, he went through so much trouble to set up two layers of space just to please a certain 'big shot'? Werewolf warriors were injured or sacrificed for this, and even the lives of their people were sacrificed in the Lily of the Valley. Was this all for such a bullsh*t reason?
I looked at him as if I was looking at an alien. Finally, I could no longer pretend to be calm and asked in disbelief, "Just for this? Just to put on a show? Then why are you still a triad member? Why don't you just become an acrobat!"
"Unfortunately, that's not my ambition," Karter replied nonchalantly. Now, please wait quietly and see what your compatriots will choose. What should I choose according to his choice?"
After that, Karter stayed in the office and pretended to sleep as if no one was around.
As time passed, more and more hostages were dragged away to be the 'battery', never to return. Many people cried until they were numb. They could only stand on the wall and wait for their own fate to come.
I was about to despair. Mixed with silver threads, the rope had almost corroded through my skin and made me weak all over, making me slump. Even the chance to struggle was gone.
I could only watch helplessly as innocent lives became sacrifices for the conspiracy. I hated myself and my current situation.
Suddenly, I felt something poking at my ankle. I looked down, but there was nothing.
I thought it was an illusion and ignored it, but the feeling became more frequent after a few seconds. I looked down again and was shocked. Only then did I realize that it was not a worm.
The tiny, carpet-colored 'bug' had a tentacle persistently poking my ankle.
In an instant, a name appeared in my mind.
Yarin?
