Chapter 121 A Single Phone Call!
Chapter 121 A Single Phone Call!
The sweet scent of vanilla candles still lingered in the air, a deceptive calm masking the utter chaos unfolding.
Hugo was on top of Lily, their breaths mingling as he leaned closer to reclaim his dominance. But then—
BRRRRING!
Lily's phone on his nightstand exploded with the most obnoxious ringtone imaginable. It was a chipmunk voiced "Baby Shark" remix that somehow included honking horns and random claps.
Hugo froze mid motion, his face shifting from confusion to livid mask disbelief in a heartbeat.
His jaw dropped. His eye twitched. His breath came out in short bursts. 'You've GOT to be kidding me. WHO IS CALLING HER RIGHT NOW?!'
His brain felt like it was short-circuiting. He glared at the phone like it was an ancient relic of evil sent to sabotage him.
'No… this isn't just a phone call. This is a villain plot! Yes, a villain! Someone—no, something—knows I'm the protagonist, and they're trying to RUIN my moment! Not today, evil forces. Not today. I won't let you win!'
With renewed determination and righteous fury, Hugo leaned down to Lily's ear, his secret weapon: earlobe assault.
He kissed it softly, then grazed it with his teeth, his touch calculated and precise. Lily shivered beneath him, letting out a shaky breath that told him he'd struck gold.
'Bullseye!' Hugo thought, smirking internally. 'The earlobe is her kryptonite. Let's see this ringtone fight me now!'
The phone continued to sing its cursed tune, but Hugo didn't falter. He kissed and nibbled like a man on a mission, determined to erase any memory of the interruption from Lily's mind.
His hands were also quite busy, he was groping her in all the right places. In fact, he was already making progress towards the honey pot.
All he needed was a bit more time to soften her up and he would be able to seal the deal.
The awful sound finally stopped, and the room was silent once more. Hugo mentally high fived himself. 'Crisis averted. I'm a genius!'
But just as he leaned in for the next move—
BRRRRING!
The ringtone was back. It was louder. It was more obnoxious. The clapping part even seemed longer!
"Are you KIDDING ME?!" he nearly screamed, though it stayed locked in his head. Lily stirred beneath him, and Hugo immediately resumed his earlobe attack.
He was beginning to get very desperate. He had a very bad feeling about that phone call, something about it made his heart tremble...
But this time, she gently pushed him back, her cheeks flushed and lips slightly swollen. Her heavy breathing fanned Hugo's face.
"I… I have to answer this," she whispered, looking guilty.
"W-What?" Hugo stammered, blinking in disbelief.
"That ringtone is for my brother," she explained. "If he calls twice, it's an emergency."
Hugo's face darkened like a storm cloud. 'Her brother. Of course, it's HIM again.' He could already feel his blood boiling.
Memories of their first date flashed in his mind—the same little menace had ruined everything back then. And now, here he was, striking again.
'Does this kid have a sixth sense for ruining my life? This kid is my nemesis. A villain in disguise!'
Reluctantly, Lily reached for the phone and answered. "Hello? What's wrong?"
From the way her eyes widened, Hugo already knew it wasn't good. He didn't need much imagination to guess what was happening.
"What? Calm down! Tell me where you are!" she said, her voice frantic.
A muffled, high pitched voice screamed from the other end, loud enough for Hugo to catch snippets.
"I'm gonna die! I'm gonna DIE!" the boy shrieked. "You have to come now, or it's over for me!"
Lily covered her mouth, looking flustered. "Okay, okay! Stay there! I'm coming!" She hung up, then turned to Hugo with a mixture of regret and urgency.
"I'm so sorry," she said, her voice soft. "He's my little brother. He said he's in danger and might… well, I have to go."
Hugo didn't respond. He couldn't. His mind was too busy screaming. 'This kid! This tiny gremlin! He's the final boss of my life, isn't he?'
Lily leaned in and kissed him deeply, her hands cupping his face. "I promise I'll make it up to you next time," she said softly. For a moment, Hugo felt the tiniest flicker of hope return.
But then she hurriedly grabbed her bra, shirt, and bag before rushing out the door.
The room fell silent except for the sound of her footsteps fading down the hallway. Hugo sat up slowly, his face a picture of devastation and disbelief.
His mouth hung open. His brows were knitted into a painful knot. His eyes stared blankly into the void.
'This… this is my life now?' he thought miserably. 'A boy I've never even met has become my greatest enemy.'
After all his efforts. After all the work he had out into making this night a success. Right when he was about to reap the fruits of his labour, a single phone call was all it took?
A single phone call was all it took to condemn him to death?!
Just as he was beginning to process his misery, he heard voices from the other room.
"Tily, wait!" It was Collins, his roommate, sounding just as desperate as Hugo felt.
"I'm sorry, Collins," Tily's voice replied apologetically. "I have to go. I really have to!"
Hugo heard the front door click open once again, then shut firmly.
For a long moment, there was silence.
Hugo stood up like a zombie, shuffling towards the living room.
There, he found Collins standing in his boxers, his hair mussed, staring at the closed door like he'd just been dumped on live television.
Their eyes met.
Neither of them said a word, but the same thought echoed in both their minds:
'That evil little brother…'
