Erniu was still somewhat afraid of Zhang Cuihua, a fear borne from countless beatings. She knew she would only get hit if she did something wrong.
Even a small child understood this.
However, Yun Hai overlooked this point, leading to unforeseeable consequences. But all that was to come later.
At Yun Lei’s house.
As Yun Hai had said, Zhao Fang was stingy when it came to outsiders. But to her own daughters and sons, her own husband, she was generous.
Zhao Fang stole a glance at Yun Lei, who was engrossed in his meal without saying a word. When she noticed her two children had finished eating, she told the eldest to take her brother outside to play.
A few married women passing by the Di Family’s courtyard looked at her from a distance and whispered to each other.
“Do you think the Di family’s new bride is not right? Her gaze is so straight, and she looks so foolish. Could it be because a high fever turned her into an idiot?”
“Don’t you know, this new wife of Di Yelei isn’t like any ordinary person. I heard that she had something going on with Businessman Zhang from the city… Anyway, she failed to escape marriage and jumped into the river on her wedding night. She ended up like this because of the cold she caught while having a high fever.”
“If you ask me, what’s the use of keeping such a shameless daughter-in-law? Better just tie her up and sell her to the brothel to save on medical expenses.”
“Di Yelei is pretty good actually. If it weren’t for his two children, he wouldn’t have married this disaster of a woman back home…”
The chirping in her ears made Liu Sisi gently close her eyes.
She had heard similar gossip over the past few days, but she simply did not pay attention to them!
Others thought she had caught a cold from escaping marriage and falling into the water, staying sick for several days. However, only she knew that she had changed her core by now, and she was no longer the same person.
The original her was just an orphan whose parents had died, grew up with her grandpa in their rural hometown. When she got her first month’s salary after graduating from college, she bought a bottle of red wine to celebrate, but after getting drunk, she woke up as this Liu Sisi, who had attempted to escape her wedding and drowned in an accident.
The gossip from a few married women suddenly woke up her idle thoughts, and she realized that she had forgotten about the big problem waiting for her!
A hurried footsteps were heard, and soon, a big man appeared before her eyes.
Di Yelei had just come back from the old house, and with a belly full of idle anger, he felt suffocated and irritable when he thought about his sickly wife lying in bed.
His biological mother passed away as soon as he was born, and tragedy struck his betrothed wife before their marriage. Years later, he finally found a new wife. Just when their lives were starting to improve, she had a fall and died, leaving him with two children and a mountain of debt.
Initially, Aunt Zhang had persuaded him, thinking about his young children, and hearing the matchmaker talking up the bride’s beauty and abilities. He gritted his teeth and agreed to the marriage, but in the end, it turned out like this.
It’s for the best—now his wife and sister-in-law wouldn’t covet the third brother’s meager stipend anymore.
Even more embarrassed, Zhao Fang said, “Well, of course, I told you first. But wouldn’t anyone else do the same in that situation? Who could have known then that the third brother would wake up so soon? If I had known, I wouldn’t have acted that way.”
Yun Lei directly exposed her lies, “Cut it out! Even if you did know, you would have done the same.”
The smile on Zhao Fang’s face was on the brink of collapse, “Shitou, I was only thinking of our family too.”
Yun Lei was tired of listening to her prattle. He put down his chopsticks and said, “I’ve had enough. I’m going out for a walk.” He then got up to leave.
Zhao Fang was so outraged she wanted to smash a bowl. But thinking about how much it cost, she could only settle for kicking a stool instead. The pain left her face contorted with pain.
Meng Yunhan was oblivious to all of this. By the time she and Yunhao returned home, the sun had already set.
Old Zhao thought they wouldn’t be returning that day. So, when he saw the family, he appeared a little surprised. Seeing Yunhao’s grim expression, he didn’t ask anything but instead helped him to his room.
“What happened? I thought you folks were going to stay in the village for a few days.” The reluctance at their leaving was evident in Old Zhao’s voice. He had grown used to having people around the house. The more, the merrier—he loved the hustle and bustle.
“Dad, don’t ask Yunhao about it. He’s in a bad mood. He fell down when we were coming back, which made his mood even worse.” Meng Yunhan quietly informed him.
Since the sun was out, Yun Hao was eager to get home quickly. And she knew that he couldn’t be dissuaded unless he learned from his own bitter experience.
So she didn’t try to stop him or offer help. In an area with a slight slope, he suffered a hard fall.
She did mention to him that he was still in rehab and needed to take things slow, but he didn’t listen. The fall was a self-inflicted hardship.
He would no doubt think twice about being so hasty in the future.
She could empathize with his rush to return to his unit and his concern that his physical strength might not fully recover.
She understood all this and tried to subtly dissuade him. But he just wouldn’t listen.
