Chapter 397: Security Fees
?
By the time Yao Ran and Long Yu reached the outer district, the rioters had already broken into the villas.
The low wooden fences were no match for the rioters. They kicked them down or climbed over, breaking doors and looting supplies.
Terrified villa owners and their families hid in underground cellars, praying they wouldn't be found. But not all prayers were answered. While a few managed to escape, others were discovered, beaten to death, or subjected to unspeakable horrors.
Surveying the situation for a moment, Yao Ran pointed to a villa and said, "A Yu, take me up there."
"Alright," Long Yu said, wrapping his arms around her waist and controlling the wind to fly to the villa roof.
Landing lightly on the roof, Long Yu supported her as she prepared her sniper rifle. Given the overwhelming number of rioters, Yao Ran opted to engage from long range.
After setting up the sniper rifle, she chose her position and loaded a bullet. Through the scope, she spotted a man dragging a teenage girl into the bushes and starting to undress her. Yao Ran's eyes turned icy at this sight. She aimed at his groin and pulled the trigger.
Psyiu~
"Ahhh!"
The man's scream echoed as he collapsed to the ground, clutching his crotch. Blood seeped from his lower body as his body trembled in pain. Seeing this scene, the girl quickly gathered her clothes and fled.
Once the girl was safe, Yao Ran aimed at the man's forehead and fired again, ending his life. While Yao Ran was sniping the rioters from the rooftop, Long Yu used his wind element energy to control the wind and fly to another area under the cover of darkness.
In less than a minute, Long Yu came to the most chaotic area. As he floated in the air, he harnessed his wind element energy to create a massive barrier around the area below, trapping over a hundred rioters at once.
By the time the rioters noticed the change in the air, it was too late. In the next few seconds, they all collapsed to the ground as the oxygen was sucked from their lungs. In mere seconds, they lay motionless on the filthy ground.
After eliminating them, Long Yu flew to another area.
Meanwhile, on the rooftop, Yao Ran observed the rioters through the scope of her sniper rifle.
While their actions appeared chaotic, they were surprisingly coordinated. Upon closer inspection, she realized the rioters actually came from three different groups.
The first group consisted of survivors exploiting the chaos to rob others of their supplies. The second group comprised gang members, and the third group consisted of members of The Ark.
With this new information, Yao Ran adjusted her sniper rifle and began targeting individuals with black badges on their clothing or wearing masks. The impoverished survivors from the slums were too poor to afford masks, making it easy for her to distinguish them from the others.
In the other area, Long Yu saw Xu Ruihan and his men arrive in armored vehicles while he was dealing with another group of rioters. As they began shooting at the rioters, Long Yu decided to fly back to the rooftop where Yao Ran was stationed.
When Yao Ran saw him return, she asked, "How are the other areas?"
Long Yu squatted beside her and replied in a low voice, "Commander Xu's nephew arrived with his men and dealt with the rioters. With them here, we can head back now."
"Alright."
Since Xu Ruihan was present, there was no longer any need for them to stay and guard the villa area.
Just as Yao Ran was putting her sniper rifle back into her space, Long Yu's satellite phone vibrated. He took it out of his pocket and answered the call.
"This is Long Yu speaking."
A moment later, Shi Xuan's calm voice came through. "Captain, a group of people came and demanded that we pay the security fees."
Sensing the annoyance in Shi Xuan's voice, Long Yu said, "Tell me the details."
"One of those wealthy families has blocked the roads and is demanding security fees from all the residents. Anyone who refuses is being forced to leave the central district. With rioters outside, they are forcing everyone to pay." Shi Xuan explained.
While listening to Shi Xuan, Long Yu wrapped an arm around Yao Ran's waist and flew toward the central district.
Holding the satellite phone in another hand, Long Yu asked, "Isn't the Xu family there? Why aren't they intervening?"
Shi Xuan replied, "The Xu, Mu, and Hua families are busy defending the outer district from the rioters, so no one is overseeing the central district."
Hearing this, Long Yu thought for a moment and said, "Understood. We are on our way back."
Minutes later, Long Yu and Yao Ran flew above the central district. From the air, they saw a fight breaking out below. Long Yu sped up his flight and landed on their villa's rooftop in no time.
As their feet touched the ground, Shi Xuan opened the rooftop door and said, "Captain, what do we do? Those people have been trying to break in for ten minutes, but they still haven't broken through the high walls and power grids."
Letting go of Yao Ran, Long Yu walked to the railing and looked down. He saw a group of men carrying ladders and plastic tarps.
Seeing this, he said, "Let's head down and teach them a lesson."
Too impatient to take the stairs, Long Yu hugged Yao Ran and flew down from the rooftop. Shi Xuan, following suit, used his space blades as footholds to descend.
The people below froze in shock when they saw the three of them descend from the air.
After a moment of silence, one man stepped forward and said, "Are you the owner of this
villa? We are acting on orders from the Ji family to collect security fees. Each person must pay 20 kilograms of food, or you will be forced to leave."
