?
Yao Ran hung her towel on the rack and replied, "I heard people talking outside. The survivors should be returning from the underground shelter by now."
Seeing Long Yu get out of bed, she added, "Come to the living room after you freshen up."
"Mhm," he murmured sleepily.
Walking out of her bedroom, Yao Ran went to the second-floor balcony. She opened the thick curtain slightly and looked outside. Countless small lights illuminated the darkness, and she watched them thoughtfully.
After observing the situation outside for a while, Yao Ran headed to the kitchen downstairs. Tired of eating the food stored in her warehouse, she decided to cook something new. While she was busy in the kitchen, Long Yu came downstairs and found her in the kitchen.
"Ran Ran, do you need help?" he asked as he approached her.
Yao Ran smiled and replied, "No need. I'm almost done here. How about you help me check what's happening outside?"
Seeing that she truly didn't need his help, Long Yu said, "Alright."
After Long Yu left, Yao Ran let out a sigh of relief. She was glad she had managed to send him out of the kitchen. Otherwise, they would have had to drink more lake water today.
Leaving the kitchen, Long Yu went to the second-floor balcony. Before opening the curtain, he turned off the solar lamp and put on the night vision goggles. Standing by the floor-to- ceiling windows, he stared outside.
Noticing that the number of survivors returning today was less than half of those who had left when the sandstorm hit the base, Long Yu fell into deep thought. As he pondered, a familiar voice from outside caught his attention.
"Everyone, the street lamps will be installed as soon as possible. In the meantime, we advise those without abilities to stay indoors to avoid any unwanted incidents," Wu Lian announced.
After Wu Lian spoke, a middle-aged woman wearing expensive-looking clothes asked, "Will you deliver supplies to us here?"
Wu Lian turned to her with a forced smile. "No. You will need to pick them up yourself from the public office."
The madam frowned in displeasure at his words and said, "If we have to fetch them ourselves, won't we need to get close to those stinky beggars from the slum?"
Wu Lian's eyes flickered with impatience, but he remained composed.
After controlling his emotion, he explained, "Madam, the public office will release an announcement later today. I'm just a soldier, so I'm not involved in these matters. If you have further questions, you can go to the public office for clarification."
Without waiting for her response, Wu Lian turned to his subordinates and said, "Let's head back to the barracks."
"Yes, Captain."
As the soldiers boarded the military trucks, the madam became enraged. She chased after Wu Lian and shouted, "Hey! Is this how you treat us? Do you know who I am?"
Wu Lian ignored her outburst and got into the truck. "Let's go," he commanded as he put on the seatbelt.
As the military trucks drove away, the madam furiously yelled at them, only to accidentally get a mouthful of sand. Spitting it out, she shouted again, "Who does he think he is? Just wait until I tell my husband! Let's see how he deals with you!"
Turning to her bodyguards, she snapped, "Why are you still standing there? Open the door!"
Startled by her anger, the bodyguards quickly cleared the sand from the road and opened the villa gate. After the madam entered, the remaining survivors followed suit, each carrying makeshift lights to illuminate their paths, and returned to their villas.
Observing this from behind the windows, Long Yu lowered the curtain, took off the night vision goggles, and turned on the solar lamp before heading downstairs.
When he returned, Shi Xuan was already awake and helping Yao Ran bring breakfast to the dining table.
Seeing Long Yu, Shi Xuan asked, "Captain, how's the situation outside?"
"Less than half of the survivors came back, and they are cleaning the sand outside," Long Yu replied as he went to the kitchen to help Yao Ran bring the remaining food out.
Soon, they all sat around the dining table. While eating, Shi Xuan suggested, "Captain, we should probably clean up the sand later."
Since the other survivors were doing it, Long Yu nodded in agreement. "Mhm."
As they ate, someone knocked on the door. Yao Ran set down her chopsticks and said, "You two continue eating. I will go and see who is coming."
Leaving the dining room, she walked to the main door and pulled aside the thick curtain to peek outside. Half of the first floor was covered in sand, so she could only see the visitor's
legs.
"Who is it?" she called out.
"It's me, Yuan Rihui," came the reply.
Recognizing the voice, Yao Ran said, "Brother Yuan, wait a moment."
Closing the curtain, she went to the second-floor balcony and opened the metal door. Looking down, she saw Yuan Rihui standing below.
"Brother Yuan, can you climb up here?" she asked.
Due to the sand, the distance from the ground to the balcony is only about two meters from the original five meters. After assessing the height, Yuan Rihui replied, "I will give it a try." After he said that, Yuan Rihui started running, leaped up, and then grabbed the balcony railing. He then pulled himself up, flipped over the railing, and then landed lightly on the floor.
He stood up, dusted off the sand from his clothes, and then smiled at Yao Ran. "Brother Yuan, you came at the right time. We are having breakfast right now. Would you like to join us?" Yao Ran offered.
Grateful for the invitation, Yuan Rihui nodded. "Alright. Thank you for your invitation."
After locking the balcony door and lowering the thick curtain, Yao Ran led Yuan Rihui to the dining room.
"Good morning, Brother Long, Brother Shi," Yuan Rihui greeted as he walked into the dining room before sitting beside Shi Xuan.
Nodding at him, Long Yu and Shi Xuan returned his greeting. "Good morning."
As they resumed eating, Yao Ran asked, "Brother Yuan, what brings you here so early today?"
