Chapter 509: Chapter 280: It’s Me, What About It? (Gentle and Amiable Version)_3
Zhao Mingyuan, upon hearing this, was momentarily at a loss for words.
Fang Chu squinted his eyes but didn’t mind the jab in Xu Qingyan’s words. His face still wore that same smile as he exchanged a few pleasantries and announced the start of the seminar.
The script from Zhao Mingyuan’s side had been printed out, a thick one. Everyone present received a copy, and just by feeling the weight one could tell it was a long story.
As Xu Qingyan took a look, “xx Memories”.
The opening scene described an old man sitting at a stone table in a residential area, telling stories to a child who asked questions. Then the old man laughed and sighed while resolving the child’s confusion.
“That’s the story of my father. Back then, the enemy was closing in….”
Gan Wenchang didn’t understand scriptwriting, but as he read, he found himself getting drawn in. It was evident that a lot of effort had gone into this script, regardless of how others had expended their efforts.
Anyway, this script was indeed quite good.
He couldn’t help but glance at Xu Qingyan surreptitiously, secretly worrying for him. Given the situation, there really seemed no need for competition anymore.
Even if this script were to be produced directly, the reception would likely not be too bad.
On the other hand, if Xu Qingyan couldn’t come up with a better script than this. Then the pointed remarks he had just made would be hard to justify if he didn’t get selected.
In fact, in the eyes of those present, it would turn into the arrogance of a newcomer. That wouldn’t be good for Xu Qingyan, at least it would greatly diminish his impression.
After reading “xx Memories,” He Guojin also instinctively looked up at Xu Qingyan with the same concern, only he didn’t know what Xu Qingyan had written in his script yet.
Considering Xu Qingyan was new to the industry, though he had chosen a good subject. Even when up against “xx Memories,” he would not be at a disadvantage, but inherently, the subject matter was difficult to write about.
After all, the expeditionary army had won at six times the enemy’s cost in the end. If he were to write about it, it would most likely be an ensemble piece. Writing it as a heroic drama would be tonally incorrect.
Because of this, He Gujin had asked numerous seasoned scriptwriters, who all said it was tough to write. It would require a lot of field research and a year’s worth of polishing.
It was also for this reason that He Guojin had not asked Xu Qingyan to review the script. In his heart, he didn’t hold much hope for it, even if there was a glimmer.
He Guojin could have asked a few veteran scriptwriters to polish the script. If the gap was too big, or if it couldn’t keep up with the project schedule, then there was no need.
Xu Qingyan flipped through Zhao Mingyuan’s script with an indifferent expression, making it impossible for Zhao Mingyuan to see the panic he had hoped for, realizing his wish had come to nothing.
It was as if a punch had hit empty space, unavoidably leaving Zhao Mingyuan a bit annoyed. But since the seminar had just begun, he couldn’t say much.
About an hour later, several people began taking bathroom breaks.
Aside from Xu Qingyan and Gan Wenchang, almost everyone there was middle-aged. There were few robust leaders like He Guojin, and many people experienced frequent and urgent urination.
Xu Qingyan, however, had seriously read Zhao Mingyuan’s script, taking it as if it were a novel. After finishing, he didn’t feel much; the beginning was quite good.
Middle into the story, however, the plot started to become absurd, such as falling in love under gunfire. The protagonist became a vigilante; truly, Zhao Mingyuan was consistently true to his passion for the fantastical.
There were certainly remarkable people, but in the script, the protagonist blowing up an armory with a single gun shot was preposterous. Bullets entering through a window, then the armory exploding.
In the heat of the battle, the protagonist escapes with his delicate wife unscathed.
Hmm… Strange material had entered the brain; the script seemed like it was cobbled together by multiple people. Similar to some TV dramas, where the narrative abruptly dives after certain scenes.
After finishing, Xu Qingyan frowned slightly, not quite able to pinpoint his feeling.
At that moment, Gan Wenchang nudged him and signaled for him to go to the bathroom. Upon following him out, Xu Qingyan found Gan Wenchang waiting for him at the door of the meeting room.
After the two met, they tacitly headed to the bathroom.
“What’s up?” he asked.
“Nothing much, what do you think of Zhao Mingyuan’s script?” Gan Wenchang frowned and asked in a lowered voice, “Do you actually have a fallback plan?”
“Maybe, his script is uncertain,” Xu Qingyan responded vaguely, “let’s see later, it’s a seminar, isn’t it? Let’s first listen to a few expert leaders’ opinions.”
“What do you mean by uncertain? You’re really killing me!” Gan Wenchang cursed, “Can’t you stop beating around the bush, damn it!”
What Xu Qingyan meant by “uncertain” referred to the unclear relationship between Zhao Mingyuan and Fang Chu. Obviously, the rotund director had clout, and whether it was a fair game was yet to be seen.
In case the experts and leaders started to lavish praise on Zhao Mingyuan’s script later on, Qingyan would have to carry an extra burden. If they remained relatively neutral, then the game could be considered safe.
As for the script, if it met someone who truly appreciated its value, it would certainly be on a crushing level.
While letting water flow, Xu Qingyan turned his head to look at Gan Wenchang.
“Hey, do you think the final decision on the script can be made today?”
Gan Wenchang startled and twitched, giving Xu Qingyan a horrified look before hastily moving three stalls away.
“What the hell?”
“What do you mean, what the hell?”
“Don’t you know the urban legend about the men’s restroom rules? I peed next to you because I trusted you. Why did you turn your head? Do you want me to accuse you of sexual harassment?”
Xu Qingyan: “…Damn it, you sure have a lot of issues.”
After Gan Wenchang finished peeing, he zipped up and furrowed his brows in thought. After pondering for a moment, he gave an equally ambiguous answer.
“Perhaps… it could be today.”
Hearing this, Xu Qingyan looked unimpressed. What was that supposed to mean?
“You don’t understand, these seminars are both boring and lengthy. It’s uncertain whether today will be enough to discuss Zhao Mingyuan’s script,” explained Gan Wenchang.
