Chapter 117 The Horde
Chapter 117 The Horde
The Fire Wolf moved a few steps out of the cage.
It growled as it stared and sized up Lin Fan.
Surprisingly, it didn't move any closer to Lin Fan.
When Lu Ding saw this, he thought there was still hope for Lin Fan.
"Hang on in there, wait for us!" Lu Ding shouted, grabbed his sword, and ran down the stairs that led to the arena's floor.
Lin Fan is such a lucky bastard, he thought.
Normally, the Fire Wolf would lunge at him and tear him up by now.
However, the Fire Wolf was simply too scared to attack Lin Fan.
It knew that Lin Fan was far too powerful for it to dare to even try.
Thud.
When Lu Ding kicked the door to the arena floor open, what they saw surprised them.
The Fire Wolf was lying on the ground as if it were asleep.
A familiar sound erupted in Lin Fan's mind.
[Ding! Congratulations on terminating malevolent intent.]

Lin Fan had used the Devouring Qi to Poison Transformation Technique and poisoned the Fire Wolf dead.
He was satisfied with its effect.
It's worth the time to cultivate the technique, Lin Fan thought.
It would definitely come in handy as a last-ditch effort.
"Are you all right? What happened to the Fire Wolf?" Lu Ding came up and checked on Lin Fan.
Lin Fan shrugged and replied, "I don't know. The Fire Wolf must have had some serious injury or something."
Lee and the other soldiers checked on the Fire Wolf's body.
But they couldn't find anything wrong with it.
The effects of the poison weren't visible to the eyes.
"You are lucky, your ancestors must have been looking out for you," Lu Ding patted Lin Fan's back and continued, "However, next time don't risk your life. There's always time for training."
The other soldiers also came and patted his back.
Even though they didn't like Lin Fan so much, they didn't wish for something bad to happen to him either.
At least Lin Fan didn't exhibit fear of demonic beasts.
The other powerful men's sons they had to handle before ran away at the mere sight of demonic beasts.
After the scare, Lu Ding called off the rest of the training at the arena, and they headed for dinner.
When dinner was over, Lee asked Lin Fan to follow him.
He enthusiastically taught Lin Fan simple strokes he could use with his sword.
And Lin Fan was able to learn in no time after watching Lee's demonstration just once.
"Wow. You are a fast learner, keep up the good work and you might survive the battlefield. And when you get back to An Xiang Village, your family will be proud of you."
Lee was impressed and praised Lin Fan.
"Thanks. But I'm the only one in my family now," Lin Fan replied.
Lee, startled, thought for a moment and said, "I'm so sorry. Feel free to come visit my family anytime you like. When we get back to our village."
Lin Fan just nodded, and they called it a day afterward.
…
The next day.
Everyone got up early for their routine morning training.
The soldiers in the team greeted Lin Fan as they walked past him.
Lin Fan figured Lee must have put in a word about his performance to the other soldiers.
He didn't care much about it but wouldn't mind a smoother mission.
They assembled at a large field, and Lu Ding led the training routine.
"Now, the next stroke is the crane and tiger strike. Follow my actions."
Lu Ding stood in front of them and demonstrated the strike.
As he was breathing in, getting ready for the strike, the sky suddenly turned dark.
Lin Fan looked up.
There were huge birds soaring in the sky, some illuminated with different colored glows, and some lit up with fire burning.
Demonic beasts!
Gong!
Gong!
Gong!
The sound of the gong filled the air.
Shouting ensued.
The horde had attacked much earlier than anticipated.
Everyone got turned out, and the soldiers weren't all prepared.
Some were still dressing up in their armor when the birds swooped down and grabbed them into the air.
Dropping them back onto the ground a few moments later.
"These bastard demonic beasts! Follow me and get your weapons. Be in our position on my command."
Lu Ding cursed when he saw what happened and instructed his team to get ready.
They ran back to the tent as they saw soldiers push crossbow chariots into position.

Whoosh!
A huge arrow glowing white, filled with Qi, shot at one of the demonic beasts in the air.
The demonic beast with a head like a reptile and wings like a bat fell to the ground after being hit by the arrow.
Soldiers then ran up and speared it to death.
Cultivators in the camp also joined in the fight.
After getting their weapons, Lu Ding led Lin Fan and the other soldiers to the northern gate of the camp.
Things were still calm at the gate.
But everyone there knew what was to come and gripped their weapons tightly.
"All right, get into position, line formation. Get ready."
Lu Ding shouted, and the soldiers from his team formed a line.
He then turned and looked at Lin Fan, "It's best you stay behind us. If anyone falls, you take over."
"Don't worry. I will," Lin Fan replied.
And if you are in danger, I will get you out of here immediately, Lin Fan thought.
His objective here was to protect the Governor's son after all.
Just as he was thinking, Lee turned back and gave Lin Fan an assuring nod.
Lee mouthed the words, "Remember, visit my home together."
That threw Lin Fan off for a brief moment, and he nodded back.
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
The next moment, the ground started to tremble.
"Incoming! Prepare for attack!"
Archers standing on top of the camp wall shouted as they shot their arrows with scriptures.
The wall, made of huge wooden beams, then rocked.
Demonic beasts outside were banging onto the wall, trying to break through.
Boom!
Finally, the gate door got busted into pieces.
An elephant-like creature had rammed it open with its four huge tusks.
It was an Ice Tusk Elephant.
The tusks gave out a blue glow, and the soldiers standing near froze when they encountered it.
Soldiers threw their spears enveloped with Qi at it.
The Ice Tusk Elephant gave out a loud trumpet when the spears got into its body.
The soldiers wanted to close in but couldn't do so.
Behind the Ice Tusk Elephant were swarms of Fire Goats, and they charged at the soldiers.
"Argh!"
"Die! You beast!"
Soldiers cried out as it became chaotic with the Fire Goats charging into their formation.
Soon, they were close to Lin Fan.
