Xaviera Evans’s eyes light up immediately, her cheeks flushed with surprise and joy as she looked at Caleb Mamet, “Caleb! Are you really taking me to see Cold Night?”
Seeing the hope in her eyes, Caleb smiled indulgently, “Yes.”
Despite the numerous hints given to Mrs. Mamet, she was still clueless. It would probably take her till the end of time to figure out who Cold Night was.
But he couldn’t understand why Mrs. Mamet was sometimes so shrewd, yet sometimes so adorably oblivious?
When people finished eating, Xaviera and Caleb excused themselves for a while. Seizing the moment when the two stepped out, Elijah Flack glanced around and whispered to Quine Heninger, “I have something to tell you.”
“Go on.”
Elijah hesitated to speak, his expression subtle, “Caleb told me that Xaviera once asked him for a kind of medicine.”
Quine queried, “What medicine?”
It’s been several months since that happened, yet Elijah just got wind of it, “Well… it’s that kind of medicine… for men… it seems Caleb has problems in that regard.”
Quine, usually calm and collected, twitched at the corners of his mouth upon hearing this unexpected news, then made a puzzled face, “So, you are saying… they’ve been married this long and haven’t…?”
“Xaviera is still young, so she might not care about this aspect, but if she does in the future and Caleb isn’t capable, wouldn’t that be problematic?”
Elijah’s expression darkened, “Did the medicine Caleb got even work? Xaviera is a girl, it wouldn’t be appropriate to directly ask Caleb about this. Besides, we as her elder brothers aren’t in a position to ask. Caleb would be losing face and inevitably resent Xaviera. After all, this concerns a man’s pride, which is something no man can tolerate being insulted.”
Quine slightly lifted his eyes, “How about… letting him try that medicine?”
By the time Xaviera and Caleb returned to their seats, they couldn’t help but find the two older brothers’ behaviour peculiar. Why were they always encouraging her and Caleb to drink?
At the end of dinner, Xaviera was inebriated to the point of softness, her drunken face laid on the table.
Elijah promptly said, “Xaviera, it is getting late. You and Caleb should head upstairs to rest. We have eaten enough.”
Xaviera seemed a bit lost, her hand gripping a wine glass, she boisterously declared, “Big bro, let’s keep drinking!”
Seeing her drunken state, Elijah turned to Caleb, “Mr. Caleb Mamet, Xaviera is drunk and must be feeling unwell. Why don’t you help her take a bath before she retires for the evening?”
By now, Caleb was acutely aware of slight changes in his body. He wondered where Xaviera’s brothers had heard those rumors from and hence slipped him the medication.
Caleb carried Xaviera back to their bedroom, gently laying her on the bed. After preparing the bath, he softly said, “Xaviera, let’s take a bath.”
Her head felt dizzy with no strength in her body, she just grunted and turned her head away, ignoring him.
Caleb leaned in, whispering in her ear, “Mrs. Mamet, it seems your two elder brothers have misunderstood something. Shouldn’t you help clarify the mess you caused?”
Xaviera opened her sleepy eyes, looking at him in confusion, “What misunderstanding?”
Seeing her flushed cheeks and dazed eyes, Caleb felt an increasing restlessness in his body. He couldn’t help but reach out to hold her in his arms, taking in the softness of her body and her warm temperature.
A faint smile appeared on the man’s lips, satisfied, “Actually, there’s no need for an explanation. I will prove myself through my actions.”
Xaviera was utterly confused and didn’t understand Caleb’s words. Before she knew it, Caleb had lifted her and was slowly walking towards the bathroom.
Caleb gently lowered her into the water. As she lay in the warm bath with hot steam around, Xaviera sobered up a bit, wondering what her brothers might have misunderstood?
Was it that they were worried Caleb was treating her badly, or that Caleb had some secrets? So that’s why they made the trip to the Lowen Clubhouse to confront him?
At the end of the dinner, their attitude towards Caleb had obviously got better, meaning the misunderstanding had been cleared. If so, then what’s there to explain?
Xaviera pondered these questions in the bathtub, then suddenly remembered she had told Irene Hamer that Caleb had sexual issues, who in turn relayed this to Albert, and the next day, Albert brought that kind of medicine.
Later when she realized she’d misunderstood Caleb, she forgot to clear up the misunderstanding with Albert. Actually, Caleb was perfectly capable!
