?
Yarin's POV:
Aunt Eve wanted to take it, but the old man avoided her and looked at me pleadingly.
He wanted me to come and take this candy, just like the first three. This candy was specially given to me.
When I took the candy, the old man heaved a sigh of relief, but then he wailed in pain from his mouth blocked by the hemp rope. Only then did I realize that the rope on his hand was not tied around his hand but pierced through his palm and wrist!
Someone seemed to be pulling on the other side of the rope. The old man was pulled and turned around. He staggered a few times and disappeared into the air.
This cruel and strange scene shocked everyone.
I heard the sound of grinding teeth. It was a warrior gnashing his teeth.
"To treat a weak old man like this..."
Normal people would never understand the behavior of a pervert, especially when this pervert attacked the vulnerable. Pure cruelty and despicable were no longer enough to describe this kind of heartless behavior.
Warriors followed the order to the first floor one after another. Aunt Eve asked most people to lie in ambush in the corridor and the surrounding rooms. She only led two teams, including Aunt Dorothy and me, into the central conference room.
We raised our spirits and prepared ourselves, but the conference room was empty. There were only two candies on the large conference table.
One was like the previous four, with a stone hidden inside. The other was just an ordinary candy, emitting a sweet and fragrant smell under the warmth of the palm.
Other than that, a huge complicated array was drawn on the table. It was exactly the same as the mark on the stone. When the five stones approached the table, the array gathered dark light. When they moved away, it returned to silence.
Even though there wasn't a single note left behind, I understood the other party's intentions.
After the stone trick was exposed, the Lily of the Valley left us the only 'key'. It was no different from a stone. The only thing that changed was our situation.
Saving people? Alright, use the key to open the 'door' and come in. It was just sacrificing the lives of a few soldiers. I was sure they already had the awareness to sacrifice themselves from the moment they accepted the mission.
Unwilling? That was a pity. We wouldn't be kind to the hostages. Since you couldn't bear to part with the soldiers' lives, let us do you a favor and use the lives of the hostages to open the 'door'!
Let's start with this girl named Lily!
I felt my eyes empty, my cheeks convulse, and exhaustion and fear suddenly broke through the barrier, making my feet soft and almost fall.
Aunt Eve quickly supported me. She stared at the array and said through gritted teeth, "I'll have the warriors go into the forest to catch more wild rabbits and pheasants."
Aunt Dorothy was pessimistic. "I don't think it's going to help. Remember those rabbits? Logically speaking, the stone won't let go until the life force of the sacrifice is completely sucked out. Like what happened to the other werewolf grandmasters and me, I had to cut off my fingers to escape."
"But with rabbits, it stops when they just pass out. This meant that the array had already set a condition. It only wanted one kind of sacrifice and nothing else."
"I will never allow a warrior to..." Aunt Eve only said half of her sentence, but we all understood her.
"Of course not," Aunt Dorothy murmured. "The Lily of the Valley wants us to choose between the soldiers and the hostages, but we have to choose both and neither. Otherwise, we will fall into a trap and lose completely. Who knows if they will use similar tricks to restrain us? What should we do then?" Would they only stop when they are the only ones left?"
"We can't do this. We have to find another way..."
The room fell into silence. A warrior wanted to say something, but Aunt Eve glared at him. He paused momentarily but still said, "I'm willing to try, sir. We don't need to sacrifice ourselves. We only have to contribute some life force."
"Just like what the werewolf grandmasters did. When they feel that they can't hold on any longer, they will immediately cut off the body parts that come into contact with the evil sacrificial array. Without the medium, it will no longer be able to absorb our life force."
This suggestion immediately attracted the support of the other warriors.
Aunt Dorothy whispered in my ear, "That's Reddrick. His fiancée and sister are both working at the broadcast station."
I immediately understood why he was so anxious.
However, Aunt Dorothy disagreed with this approach. "What if the other party has calculated the number of people we have and has to make sacrifices to meet the requirements of the array? Moreover, a complete formation differed from a split formation carved on a stone. In theory, it is more powerful. Once one is contaminated, they would probably not be separated unless they died."
Reddrick lowered his head in despair. He was willing to sacrifice himself but couldn't watch his close comrades die for this.
What a sinister choice. None of the answers were right, but the person who set the question forced us to choose the wrong answer. Otherwise, we would have to pay the price.
As everyone was at a loss, the little one finally sent news.
