Chapter 99 Bai Yunfei's Invitation
Chapter 99 Bai Yunfei's Invitation
"Good evening, Old Xiao, logging off so early?"
As Bai Yunfei spoke, he walked straight to the computer next to Xiao Buli, turning on the computer while casually handing over a cup of coffee.
The moment he saw Bai Yunfei, he suddenly felt a sense of safety—a really strange feeling, like when someone is home alone watching a horror movie and getting scared when suddenly a familiar friend comes over for a visit.
Xiao Buli took the coffee, its warm touch somewhat steadying his nerves. He took a sip, and the bitter yet rich taste invigorated his spirit.
But wait a minute, he suddenly remembered something—shouldn't Bai Yunfei be able to see ghosts too? Don't necromancers have the Spiritual Eye? Could it be that he had known about the ghost in the studio all this time? Considering this, it seemed very likely he knew the game's secrets, and the idea grew stronger with every conversation he recalled having with Bai Yunfei.
The only issue now was how to confirm it.
He glanced around the room; half of the female ghost's face was peering out from behind the wall. If Bai Yunfei could see ghosts, there was no reason he wouldn't notice these three.
He continued to sip his coffee while watching Bai Yunfei turn on the computer and log into the game.
"Still up for gaming this late?" Xiao Buli probed.
"Yeah, I'm almost done with my class change quest. I'm planning to finish it in one go tonight." Bai Yunfei hadn't noticed anything unusual about Xiao Buli, and continued talking as he turned to glance at the standing Xiao Buli, "Why have you stopped playing so early?"
Xiao Buli sat back down again. Although the presence of the ghost made him feel as if the entire room was haunted, not getting to the bottom of this now would only lead to bigger headaches later—like discovering a rat in the house, if you don't find a way to kill it, who knows when it might pop out again and give you a scare.
"So you really received the Corpse-driving Warlock's advanced quest?"
"Yeah," Bai Yunfei said excitedly, "You know, I've been really lucky. Corpse-driving Warlocks can control zombies in combat, it's one of the powerful Mage Professions, and it'll make soloing dungeons much easier for me."
"By the way, Old Bai, I heard that you've seen ghosts before? Is that true?" Xiao Buli said very casually, but he was observing Bai Yunfei's reaction, who sure enough, hesitated for a moment.
"Ha, who told you that? You believe in that kind of thing?" Bai Yunfei looked up doubtfully at Xiao Buli, just in time to see a ghost standing behind Xiao Buli, waving frantically at him, which startled him.
Seeing the change in Bai Yunfei's expression, Xiao Buli couldn't help but smile, "So what's the deal with the person behind me then?" He obviously couldn't have eyes on the back of his head, but he could guess from Bai Yunfei's expressions.
Bai Yunfei's movements stiffened for a moment, and he seemed somewhat panicked, yet still he flatly denied: "What are you joking about? I don't see anything."
Xiao Buli's certainty of his guess grew with Bai Yunfei's reaction.
He stared at Bai Yunfei for a brief few seconds and then laughed, "I see, it looks like I've been gaming too much lately and even starting to hallucinate."
While speaking, he scratched his head and stood up, "But I'm a bit superstitious, as you might know. To ease my mind, it seems I can only talk to Manager Qin about moving to another team. Of course, if she asks why, I'll have to tell her the truth."
As he spoke, he pretended to leave, all the while gauging the other's reaction. Bai Yunfei fell silent for a while, then said without expression, "I really don't know what you're talking about."
Still unwilling to admit it? Xiao Buli thought to himself and sighed inwardly as he stepped out of the server room.
Back in his bedroom, Xiao Buli felt restless. Although tonight's incident had been unexpected, he realized he might have been too risky, but it was a situation with no alternative.
For him alone to think of breaking free or even opposing the company's strength was completely unrealistic. He was well aware of this; even if he managed to advance in his profession, Xiao Buli wasn't confident that he could confront the company. Therefore, it became very urgent for him to find allies within the company.
Although Liu Xing seemed like an appropriate choice, his personality changes were too drastic, and Xiao Buli thought him unreliable.
Wu Tao appeared completely unaware of these matters, and besides, he was almost ready to resign, so Xiao Buli didn't plan to confide in him.
As for Zhang Yaoyang, he seemed too profound and was the leader of the Green Dragon Group. Xiao Buli feared he was one of the company's men and didn't even dare to test him. He had thought Bai Yunfei was the right person for an ally, but unexpectedly, Bai Yunfei didn't respond to his gestures at all.
So, what should he do next? Continue probing further or pretend nothing happened? Xiao Buli lay in bed, unable to sleep, mulling over why Bai Yunfei wouldn't admit what he clearly knew.
"Old Xiao."
A vague voice suddenly rang in his ear, as if it was incredibly distant, yet also extremely close.
"Who's there!?" He sat up abruptly from the bed and fished out a cigarette box from under his pillow. This box contained the talisman papers he had made, and it was currently his only means of defense. After scanning the surroundings, he found no one there.
"Shush, don't make a sound. Don't be alarmed, it's me—Old Bai!" This time the voice became much clearer, and Xiao Buli finally recognized it—it was indeed Bai Yunfei's voice. He stayed silent, waiting for the other party to further explain.
"This room has a bug; I'll speak, you listen, OK? Now, lie down slowly, just like you've had a nightmare."
Xiao Buli hesitated for a moment but decided to follow the instructions. Pretending to wipe sweat off his brow, he murmured to himself, "Phew, that scared the life out of me, what a terrifying dream."
While speaking, he lay back down, his eyes squinting but not completely closed, using the corner of his eye to scan the dark room.
Suddenly, something caught his peripheral vision on the ceiling. He opened his eyes a bit more to have a closer look and was stunned—Bai Yunfei was floating in mid-air above his head, his body semi-transparent, descending slowly like in sleep paralysis.
Soul Out Of Body? A thought flashed through Xiao Buli's mind, calming him down a bit, though this way of appearing was too horrifying!
At that moment, Bai Yunfei's shadow made a silence gesture. "Don't move, there are surveillance cameras."
After he finished speaking, he looked relieved to see Xiao Buli cooperating, "The Green Dragon Group's server room has surveillance cameras and bugs. There were some things inconvenient to mention earlier, but I'm currently in a Soul Out Of Body state, so the voice won't be picked up by the bugs, which is why it's safe."
"You've apparently found out some things from what you said earlier, though I don't know how you realized it, but I think you're not the type to leave your fate to luck. If you want to know the truth, then come with me. Remember not to be too obvious and don't look at me. Just act like you can't sleep and are going out for a snack."
After finishing, Bai Yunfei's semi-transparent image gently floated down from the air and went straight through the door.
Xiao Buli's heart was thumping wildly. There was finally a glimmer of hope. He didn't know what Bai Yunfei would show him, but despite his eagerness to know, he still tried to act like he couldn't sleep, tossing and turning in bed for a while before getting up from the bed with a sigh.
Rubbing his eyes and in his pajamas, Xiao Buli tried to look natural as he opened the door; Bai Yunfei's Primordial Spirit stood opposite him.
"This way!" Bai Yunfei pointed in the direction of the lounge and floated off the ground towards it.
Walking along the hallway, Xiao Buli's heart raced, surveillance camera heads were swinging back and forth not too far away, but Bai Yunfei didn't seem to fear being seen at all; he even made a face at the cameras, acting recklessly, probably a benefit of being in Spiritual Body form.
He followed Bai Yunfei's Primordial Spirit all the way to the front of the lounge's liquor cabinet and stopped.
Bai Yunfei pointed at the liquor cabinet, "Have a drink first, then go to the restroom in ten minutes. You'll then understand the truth."
After Bai Yunfei spoke, he went straight through the public restroom door.
Xiao Buli sat down, picked up a bottle of kvass, and with two ice cubes started drinking slowly. He didn't intend to drink alcohol, as it would dull his senses, and what he needed now was absolute calm.
What could be waiting for him behind the restroom door? Was Bai Yunfei trustworthy? He didn't know any of this and had no way of anticipating it in advance or avoiding it.
His hand holding the glass trembled. Xiao Buli struggled to suppress the unease inside. An end must come tonight, he thought. There was always a sense of helplessness and uncertainty in this company. Whether he was stepping into a trap or meeting a group of like-minded individuals, now was the time to end all speculations.
He finished the last drop in his glass, pocketed the cigarette box while keeping a few talisman papers in hand just in case, and glanced at his watch—it had been ten minutes. Pretending to need the restroom, he pushed open the door and walked in.
No sooner had he entered than he felt a cold sensation on his neck as something like a blade pressed against his throat.
"Don't move, handsome, or I can't guarantee my hand won't slip," a very familiar voice warned—a voice that was unmistakably Yaoyao's. His head was forced upward as he turned around; the restroom door closed behind him. In the next moment, Xiao Buli's hand flashed with the talisman paper in a burst of white light—Ethereal Armor! An instant protective barrier separated him from the blade.
Taking advantage of the moment of surprise, Xiao Buli reached out to grab Yaoyao's wrist that held the knife, but she slipped under his arm like a fish and darted to one side.
"It's all yours," he heard Yaoyao whisper.
Just as Xiao Buli turned around to summon a Rune Soldier with the talisman paper, before he could even chant the spell,
"Plum Blossom Point Pressing Skills!" Suddenly, something pricked him from behind, and his body immediately went numb and froze, unable to move. (Could this be the legendary Acupoint Sealing?) he thought, astonished. What surprised him even more was the voice—it sounded a bit like Wu Tao's. (To be continued.
