Chapter 751 A Timely Awakening - I
Chapter 751 A Timely Awakening - I
Seraphina expelled a mouthful of blood, as the demonic wolf enveloped in crimson and ebony aura behind her threw its head back in a resounding howl.
Within a thirty-meter radius around her, no living being remained. Shredded dragon heads, forcibly torn flesh wings, bodies pulverized into a gory mess, and massive white bones splintered asunder... The wolf beast, as if dwelling in the infernal realm of carnage, wiped the blood stains from its visage. Her dark crimson eyes brimmed with both the exhilaration of slaughter and an undeniable weariness.
The girl tightened her trembling hands, worn from prolonged, intense combat. She raised her gaze skyward, and in the instant a colossal flying dragon was about to breach the defensive line, she soared heavenward with lightning speed.
As the swift dragon still beat its wings, the phantom of the crimson-black demon wolf pierced its thorax, wrenching its sternum asunder, unleashing a torrential downpour of blood mid-air.
Seraphina planted her foot upon the bisected dragon corpse she had rent asunder. While reducing the already lifeless dragon to a pulpy mass, she propelled herself towards another dragon attempting to breach the line. Skull-shattering, flesh-rending, life-extinguishing... This cycle repeated endlessly. Her figure, seemingly cloaked in blood, carved countless frenzied crimson arcs through the sky.
The lamentations of dragons and the wrathful roars of the demon wolf reverberated through the heavens, instilling a bone-chilling dread in every extraordinary being who had yet to retreat.
Never had they witnessed such an inconceivable monster. Once she endured the chaotic melee for a time, it became nigh impossible to inflict harm upon her. To vanquish this pact head, branded as Marlowe the Calamity, one would need either overwhelming force or sheer numbers to exhaust her completely.
Yet now, with the higher-ranked dragon species almost entirely suppressed by Hydral, Seraphina Marlowe... had been wreaking havoc on the battlefield for a full day and night—moreover, she had lost both arms in yesterday's battle with a fifth-stage dragon, yet her vigor remained undiminished.
Despite having etched an indelible image of a goddess of slaughter in the minds of the extraordinary beings over these past few days, she who was so fervent for battle and the hunt bore only a grave and irascible countenance.
"These damn lizards, how can there be... so many!"
After obliterating a massive dragon head two to three meters in diameter with a single kick, Seraphina plummeted from the sky. Gazing at the seemingly endless dragon tide in the distance, she cursed vehemently, "Dragons? They're nothing but cockroaches! And Ravenna, where the fuck have you gone?"
Ansel ultimately did not prevent Seraphina from stepping onto the battlefield to resist the dragon calamity. In her eyes, this was not only salvation for the civilians of the west but also a means to aid Ansel in his struggle against fate. Seraphina could find nothing more meaningful than this, and thus Ansel could do nothing to dissuade her.
As it happened, Ansel also wished to discontinue Ravenna's maintenance of the God from the Machine, so he dispatched them to operate together on the frontline. Although both were only of the fourth stage, with most high-stage forces having been swept away by Ansel, these two pact heads were more than capable of unleashing a massacre on the battlefield.
While Seraphina appeared to be the greatest harbinger of death on this battlefield, Ravenna was the true "Reaper" in every sense of the word.
The God from the Machine as a high-end force had granted Ansel near-invincibility against those below the sixth stage, but Ravenna's original expertise lay in merciless slaughter at the middle and lower stages.
Six hundred and sixty-six autonomous floating cannons dispersed across the battle line, unleashing a frenzied barrage. No one could keep count of how many lesser dragon species the floating cannons had annihilated over the past few days. No matter how inconceivable, to Ravenna, it was merely a meaningless number.
"I ventured into the depths of the Celestial Path mountains," Ravenna said as iron-grey particles coalesced beside Seraphina. Light flickered in Ravenna's palm, projecting an image of the mountain range that stood at the continent's center, reaching towards the heavens.
"Have you lost your mind?!"
Seraphina flinched violently, clearly terrified. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she exclaimed, "Aren't you afraid of being torn apart by those ancient monsters hidden there? Didn't Ansel warn you not to rely on your unique situation to sneak in?"
Nidhoggur's peculiarity allowed Ravenna to bypass the perception of many frenzied dragon species. She had previously proposed to Ansel a plan to infiltrate the Celestial Path mountains and investigate, but he had refused.
While Flamelle and the future Sky Wolf Emperor could come and go freely in the Celestial Path mountains, it didn't mean that the mountain range, which had spanned the continent for hundreds of thousands of years or even longer, was devoid of danger.
Due to her unique physical form, Ravenna need not worry about physical harm, but the trade-off was that her soul was particularly vulnerable. Ansel had no idea what dangers lurked within the Celestial Path mountains and could not possibly agree to Ravenna's reckless request.
He had assumed that given Ravenna's rationality and composure, no matter how much she wanted to help him, she wouldn't make such an ill-conceived move. Yet, she had done it anyway.
"Do you think continuing like this is the solution?" Ravenna retorted. "It wouldn't be surprising if fate released Evora at any moment. In two more days, extraordinary beings might all flee. By then, Ansel will spend who knows how long just dealing with the rampaging dragon calamity. What about Evora's situation? Moreover..."
"Moreover, what?"
Seraphina noticed Ravenna's peculiar expression and felt a growing sense of foreboding.
Ravenna summoned a floating cannon, obliterating the nearest lesser dragon several hundred meters away. Lowering her gaze, she said gravely, "I'll tell you about that matter later. It's crucial and must be discussed while Ansel isn't here. For now, let me brief you on the Celestial Path mountains while we repel this wave of invaders."
As they moved through the blood-soaked battlefield, Ravenna explained rapidly, "I was cautious and didn't venture to the extreme depths, but I made some crucial discoveries."
The miniature projection in Ravenna's palm showed a scene of countless dragons crowding the sky, a sight that made one's scalp tingle. Seraphina's eyes twitched, "Is there truly no end to them? How can there still be so many?"
"Look closer," Ravenna enlarged the image in the light screen. "Observe what these dragons are doing." Find more to read at My Virtual Library Empire
Casually unleashing a crimson-black energy wave that pulverized a land dragon into a bloody mist, Seraphina furrowed her brow as she stared at the screen. Gradually, her expression morphed into one of horror.
"Damn..." she muttered in disbelief. "They're... slaughtering each other?"
