Chapter 80 The Magic Police
Chapter 80 The Magic Police
Xu Lin broke out in a cold sweat.
He nearly thought he was about to be killed outright by that car.
The heart in his chest was beating violently, as if predicting that everything that had just happened was not a dream.
Zhou Tao's icy gaze was deeply imprinted in Xu Lin's mind.
Why did he do that?
Meanwhile, the people in the car started arguing about what just happened, with the two women squished by the rear door continuously condemning the recent actions.
"Zhou Tao, have you lost your mind?"
"Yeah, Zhou, did you even think about the consequences of what you've done?"
"If it weren't for Officer Xu, we would have—"
The two women were still speaking, one after the other when Zhou Tao, sitting in the passenger seat, suddenly turned around and roared: Read the latest on empire
"Enough!"
"I call the shots in this car now!"
"If it wasn't for that Xu, would so many of us have died?"
While saying this, he grabbed one of the women by the neck and said viciously:
"Do you pity him?"
"Fine, then go down and join your dear Officer Xu!"
No sooner had these words fallen than the moving van came to a sudden stop, and the two men in the back, paying no heed to the woman's pleading, threw her out of the vehicle.
The other woman, from start to finish, simply watched with a look of horror, not daring to say a word.
Zhou Tao gave her a cold glance, then turned his head away.
"Drive."
The van then moved forward once more.
At the same time, a second car brushed past Xu Lin.
The people inside showed no intention of stopping either, quickly disappearing at the exit after rounding the turn ahead.
The woman who was left behind was still sitting on the ground, cursing bitterly.
And then she broke down in tears.
Just then, a sluggish shuffle of footsteps suddenly sounded by her ear.
"Xu, Officer Xu?"
Hope surged in the woman's heart as if she had grasped the last straw to save her life.
But when she looked up, she saw a mouth filled with the stench of blood biting down on her face.
By the time Xu Lin arrived beside the woman, breathless, her throat had already been torn open.
"Heh...heh..."
"Xu, Officer Xu...I…"
"I don't want to die...I don't want to die..."
The woman's breathing was as coarse as that of an asthma patient.
She clutched Xu Lin's hand tightly, yet her pupils became more and more dilated, as if covered with a layer of gray-white mist.
A flicker of emotion finally appeared on Xu Lin's indifferent face.
His facial muscles kept twitching with anger and despair woven together, forming a strange expression that looked like both laughter and tears.
"It's alright..."
"It's over now..."
"Close your eyes and take a nap..."
Suddenly, the woman in his arms stiffened, her hand that was grabbing Xu Lin's went limp and fell to the ground.
Xu Lin lowered his gaze and passed his hand over her face.
"Zhou Tao."
"You've really disappointed me."
Unbeknownst to him, a zombie had crept up behind him, its mouth wide open, ready to take a bite out of the man in front.
With a swift motion, Xu Lin swung his axe, splitting its head completely open.
He then kicked the corpse to the ground.
Clatter.
A set of keys fell out.
Following the trail of blood, he saw a gray SUV parked right in front of him.
The doors were wide open.
Apparently, the zombie must have crawled out from inside.
Vroom—rumble, rumble—
The engine roared to life inside the parking lot.
The snarling SUV rolled over the zombies gathered in front and, after a sharp turn, quickly vanished at the exit.
Half an hour later, a white sedan was parked by the side of the road.
The faces of the people inside were filled with anxiety.
"Hurry up, drive!"
"Can you even do this, goddammit?"
The two people in the back were constantly urging, talking while watching the movements around them.
The noise they had just made from the collision was not small.
The zombies were almost upon them.
The driver was equally terrified, his hands holding the steering wheel shook uncontrollably, but he couldn't get the car to start.
He had been driving too fast and accidentally crashed into a stone pillar by the roadside.
The sedan stalled on the spot.
"No good, it won't start, we need to find another car!"
"Take advantage of the fact the zombies haven't come over yet!"
"Hurry and get out of the car!"
After he said this, he got out of the car first. Seeing this, the two people in the back hurriedly squeezed out as well.
But before the three of them could find an appropriate vehicle, seven or eight zombies on the opposite side of the street had already noticed the commotion here and began to approach, snarling as they drew closer.
At the same time, the shapes of zombies kept appearing from other directions.
The three men were about to be surrounded by the horde.
Bang—
A loud collision rang out!
The few zombies that had just reached the middle of the road were instantly sent flying!
They looked at the SUV that had stopped in front of them, feeling somewhat uneasy at first, but they relaxed when they saw the face behind the car window.
"Officer Xu?"
"Look, it's Officer Xu!"
"Thank goodness, it looks like we're saved!"
The three men, seeing the person's face clearly in the car, immediately went to open the door, but found the doors were like they were welded shut and couldn't be opened at all.
At the same time, the zombies on both sides were less than twenty meters away from them.
They panicked, crying out in a hurry:
"Officer Xu, open the door!"
"It's me, I'm Little Wang, I've always been following you!"
One of them, noticing the icy expression on Xu Lin's face, finally realized something and a hint of guilt flashed in his eyes.
He was about to explain when the person inside the car asked:
"Why?"
"What?"
The man was stunned, then quickly replied:
"I apologize, Officer Xu, we were wrong earlier!"
"In that situation, we had no choice; you can understand, right?"
Seeing this, the other two quickly added, "Right, right, right, special circumstances call for special measures, isn't that what you taught us?"
"Can we discuss this in the car?"
"The zombies are coming!"
"Please!"
Their expressions became increasingly frantic, their tone more desperate, as they spoke and their arms worked hard to pry the door open.
But Xu Lin made no move to open the door, just watching them indifferently.
"Special circumstances?"
"Heh, that does make sense."
As he spoke, he suddenly rolled down the car window in front of him.
One of the men, elated, immediately reached his hand through from the outside, fumbling for the door's lock.
But just as he was about to touch the lock and open the door, a hatchet, already stained red with blood, suddenly chopped down on his arm, which was halfway inside!
Amidst the severe pain, the man screamed and quickly retracted his arm.
A flash of anger appeared in the eyes of the other two:
"Xu, what are you doing?"
"You're an officer!"
"It's your duty to save people!"
"Blame Zhou Tao, for god's sake—it was him leading, not us!"
The two glared at Xu Lin inside the car, but subconsciously took a few steps back.
Just then, a sound came from behind them.
Zombies.
The injured man was the first to be tackled to the ground.
Then came the two companions who had just been furiously cursing at Xu Lin.
Seven or eight starving zombies didn't give the three men a chance to resist, and in a matter of seconds, they were silenced.
Xu Lin watched the tragedy unfold outside through the car window, the last traces of compassion in his eyes being replaced by indifference.
Their lives were ones he had saved.
Now, they were simply being returned.
An officer?
