Chapter 29
Chapter 29
After joining the Assassin Guild, Ye Bai obtained a faction equipment called the [Assassin's Gray Robe].
This equipment occupies the 'Clothing Slot' but does not take up the character's regular equipment slots. However, once equipped, it publicly reveals the wearer's faction identity, activating faction-specific effects while also making the wearer a target for enemy factions' attacks.
Think of the Assassin Guild as the evil mastermind organization in martial arts dramas—the kind that everyone loves to hunt down and exterminate.
What's most ruthless is that, unlike other factions where infighting and attacking fellow faction members immediately lowers one's reputation, the Assassin Guild is different. Here, as long as you kill your designated target, regardless of which faction they belong to—even if it's one of your own—you'll be treated equally.
In short, it's a textbook example of "Chaotic Neutral," a faction tailor-made for PK (Player Kill) enthusiasts. If you're confident you won't get killed in return, the rewards for hunting down targets are quite lucrative.
See, in the multiverse of "Eternal Realms," there's no red-name system like in other games. Normally, fighting in the wilderness goes unchecked—even in the outskirts of towns and cities, the worst that happens is a slight decrease in territory favorability. Of course, if you start smashing NPC property or dare to brawl in the noble residential district, the town guards will swiftly teach you a lesson.
And if a player dies in a PK, unless they're carrying an item with the 'guaranteed drop upon death' trait, the chance of losing items from their inventory is less than 1%. Killing someone doesn't inherently yield any extra rewards.
But once you join the Assassin faction, robbing and killing others becomes a viable strategy.
Truthfully, if Ye Bai hadn't been caught up in this kidnapping incident, she wouldn't have chosen to join the Assassin Guild.
Factions are permanent; once you select one, there's no turning back—not unless you delete your character and start over. And the Assassin Guild? Let's just say it's known as the "Orphan Faction" for a reason, despised by the world over. If you don't wear faction attire, you might blend in, but once you don that gray robe, you become a walking target for reputation points in the eyes of other factions.
Normally, joining a conventional faction not only grants you faction benefits, but you can also reap rewards from allied factions. Even well-known evil organizations have their allies, their faction rivals. The Assassin Guild? They're a faction that even turns on their own.
But since Ye Bai made the choice, she isn't regretting it. She herself might not enjoy the perks of a regular faction, but she's also a lord. With that title, she can still earn reputation and benefits from other factions via her territory—people might snub her personally, but they won't dare ignore her land or the energy crystal mine within it.
The only drawback is that conducting large-scale transactions for her territory is now a bit more cumbersome.
"It's a pity my territory hasn't produced any stealth suits yet, or I'd truly go full dark mode..."
Thinking about it, Ye Bai felt a hint of destiny in how she originally obtained the stealth suit blueprint from a dungeon.
Soon, in the dark alleyways (Black Street), a shadowy figure slipped away silently, heading straight for the wilderness.
---
Nighttime is prime farming hours for many players, and Tute City, being one of the major hubs, boasts rich resources for leveling.
Makur Star is part of a server-like system, home to three major cities, just as the spaceship mechanic mentioned. Due to its proximity in reality, the corporate factions on Makur Star are concentrated in Tute City and its neighboring towns.
To streamline management, the company eventually relocated all its employees born in nearby towns to Tute City, making it the corporate faction's base of operations.
Currently, Tute City is indeed dominated by Makur Corporation.
At ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????this very moment, players grinding in the Abandoned Mine Field, a popular monster zone, are all affiliated with Makur Corporation.
"-95"
Moffy had just finished off one of the zone's signature monsters, the Rock Lizard, when he saw a familiar figure approaching from the depths of the cave.
"Wow, you already collected ten pieces of Refined Sandstone today? That's fast!"
"Haha! Pure luck—just encountered an elite lizard and got a high-grade piece! Think I can clock out early today!" The other man chuckled with excitement.
Grinning from ear to ear, the excited employee waved goodbye to his coworker as Moffy watched, a mix of envy and frustration gnawing at him. "Don't just tomorrow—looks like you can take the whole week off!"
As the two parted ways, Moffy glanced at his own meager haul. He was only halfway to the daily quota of ten Refined Sandstones. The corporation had given them these special employees access to the Star Network, but in return, they had to fulfill the company's in-game assignments, grinding out minimal daily quotas. Anything above that granted them personal playtime.
This privilege was only extended to transparent, loyal, seasoned employees within Makur Corporation. After all, "Eternal Realms" boosts mental strength, and mental fortitude is the gateway to class mobility and even life extension.
"Should I head deeper?" Moffy hesitated, his fingers tightening around his weapon. His combat skills were average among his coworkers. Venturing deeper into elite monster territory could spell disaster if he wasn't careful.
That's when Moffy heard footsteps from behind, assuming it was his coworker returning.
He turned—but instead, a stranger walked into view. The figure wore a distinctive, simple gray robe, their face completely obscured under a hood, revealing only a shadowy outline of a chin.
A gentle breeze ruffled the robe's sleeves, revealing a hand clutching a pristine, white silver longsword, poised for attack without so much as a warning.
"Incoming!"
Closer now, Moffy could make out the sword's razor-sharp edge and the shimmering gemstones embedded in the hilt. With one glance, it was clear this weapon was no ordinary item.
Adrenaline surged as his combat instincts kicked in; Moffy rolled swiftly to the opposite side of the attacker's swing.
But before he could regain footing, a searing pain shot through his back as if something sharp had impaled him.
"-326" [Earth Spike]
Gasping through the pain—his sensory settings weren't dulled for optimal training—Moffy spotted the sharp stone spires jutting from the ground beneath him, and knew this wasn't going to be an ordinary fight.
Aside from the injury, the damage he just received sent chills down his spine. Unaugmented by strength or stamina boosts, his Level 10 HP sat at a standard 350, bolstered by a Level 1 leather armor with 5 resistance. Factoring in his attribute-based damage reduction, he should have absorbed at least 50 non-physical damage.
Without that critical armor, Moffy would have been instantly killed in that first exchange!
Before he could digest this revelation, the gray-robed figure struck again with the silver sword, moving fluidly despite the heavy robe—as if it were charmed to stay in place, shrouding the attacker's identity perfectly no matter the motion.
Before Moffy could figure out the stone spikes, the figure swung again, and he had no choice but to dodge while counterattacking with his axe.
In a burst of desperation, he aimed for a tricky angle to land a slash on the attacker.
But the moment the axe made contact, no damage numbers appeared, leaving Moffy dumbfounded.
Moffy realized with dread that his attack hadn't even cracked his opponent's defense...
Then, as if that wasn't shocking enough, an instant later, a reverse shockwave surged through the axe.
"-35"
Dazed, Moffy felt his vision black out as his body disintegrated into white light, his inventory and several items spilling out like those of any slain monster.
The assailant was none other than Ye Bai, and Moffy's demise was no accident—his defeat stemmed from an item Ye Bai had carefully chosen:
[Barbed Leather Armor]
Rank: Rare
Defense: 30
Resistance: 15
Effect (Barbs): Reflects 40% of physical damage.
Requirement: Professional Class
Description: "Go on, try me..."
This leather armor cost Ye Bai a whopping 21 gold coins, and though its stats didn't stand out among equipment of its level, its 'Barbs' effect was invaluable.
As a magic-user, Ye Bai could've opted for a mage robe to boost her spellcasting, but given that current players relied mainly on physical attacks, this armor was the more practical choice.
In "Eternal Realms," equipment isn't bound by character level or class. Each item, even those crafted by the same maker, has unique attributes, and those above green quality occasionally come with special requirements.
If it weren't for the fact that all [Heavy Armor] equipment requires strength attributes and reduces movement speed, Ye Bai wouldn't mind putting one on.
Another purple-tier item is quite intriguing. To acquire such a treasure for just 11 gold coins, Ye Bai felt a bit lucky.
?Snowblade?
Level: Rare
Attack: 6
Attack Speed: 2.0
Attack Range: 3
Focus: 20
Charisma: 20
Special Effect: 100% increased spellcasting speed during attacks
Wear Requirement: Mana > 200
Description: A magical longsword that shimmers like crystalline snow, the addition of magical gems plays a significant...role in its stunning appearance.
For other classes, this sword is indeed just a decorative item, quite useless. However, for Ye Bai, it is practically a divine weapon at this stage, even surpassing some legendary gold-tier mage equipment.
Magical profession equipment usually comes in the form of spellbooks and wands, with attributes either boosting [Focus] or [Charisma]. Focus enhances a mage's spell strength, while Charisma boosts a sorcerer's psychic power.
Among Rare-tier equipment, the base value is typically 20. Yet, due to Ye Bai's hidden class trait, 'Arcane Versatility,' she gains bonuses from both Focus and Charisma, boosting her total to 40, reaching the threshold of legendary equipment.
The special effect, '100% increased spellcasting speed during attacks,' is less useful for remote-attacking magical professions, who would instead seek equipment that boosts spell range. For classes like [Mage-warriors] that deal magical damage alongside physical attacks, Focus and Charisma are irrelevant.
Ye Bai's spell range is naturally short. By reframing her strategy and utilizing this special effect, her longsword attacks become distractions, with the real deadly strikes coming from unpredictable spells.
With spellcasting speed doubled, Ye Bai's spells practically become instant cast at her current level.
Adding to this, Ye Bai's set of physical anti-damage leather armor, combined with her high level and equipment attributes, means she fears no close combat with other players. Just like with Moffy earlier, he couldn't even penetrate her defense, turning her into a fighter who happens to know spells—unstoppable!
After the battle, Ye Bai collected all the items dropped by Moffy.
Before heading out, she had specifically upgraded her space backpack in preparation for the upcoming slaughter, hoping the spoils of war might recoup some losses.
Moffy's colleague had already met a worse fate.
"Not as rich as the last one..."
With a sigh, the gray-robed figure continued deeper into the mine.
Ye Bai's spaceship was scheduled to arrive at Makur Star in five and a half in-game days. Until then, she planned to eliminate more of the group's members within the game.
