Chapter 248 221. Turns out it was me all along
"Dorothy, I feel like you're a lot like my little sister. The moment I saw you, I thought of her, which is why I specifically invited you into the tavern today to spend more time with you. I'm sorry about that."
Alcohol surely is a wonderful thing for quickly narrowing the distance between people. After chatting for an hour, and finishing off the bottle of free wine, Dorothy finally managed to get the favorability of the Centaur Lady sitting across from her up to 70.
Thus, Miss Nina, now slightly tipsy, leaned back on the soft sofa, glanced at the little witch across from her, and finally revealed her true feelings.
The already scantily-clad Centaur Lady, now tipsy, looked alluring with her posture accentuating her voluptuous form, which made the innocent homebody witch hardly dare to raise her head, only managing to hurriedly take a sip of her drink to calm her nerves.
Well, the drinks in this tavern really were as good as Nina had previously mentioned. They were certainly costly, but there was a reason for it—they were truly delicious. Moreover, the magic power they contained was rich and mellow. Once you took a sip, the alcohol-infused magic power glided down the throat, enchanting the senses, making it impossible to stop.
Indeed, the wine called Fallen Night lived up to its name, nearly causing a self-disciplined witch like Dorothy to let her guard down and indulge.
Unfortunately, as a Dragon Witch, Dorothy's magic resistance was too high, which nearly made it impossible for her to get drunk, thus robbing her of some of the joys that come with inebriation.
When she heard Miss Nina's words, Dorothy finally understood why the Centaur Lady had such a high initial favorability toward her. It turned out to be a sentimental attachment, seeing her as a stand-in for her own sister. With that, she could make sense of it.
Some people might feel angry at being treated as a replacement, but Dorothy didn't really mind; not only was she not upset, but she sat up straight, adopting an attentive listening posture.
"Hehe, then your sister must be very cute too," Dorothy said.
The homebody witch held her head high and stuck out her chest, making a face as if to say, "I'm super cute."
Compared to those who talked so much they were annoying, girls always seemed to prefer those who were good listeners. Her demeanor instantly earned her another +2 favorability from the Centaur Lady.
"Of course, she's my pride and joy," Nina replied with an approving smile. Then, she picked up her glass, took a gentle sip, and continued.
"You wouldn't know it by looking at me now, but I was the tribe's prodigy. I had to defeat countless opponents to earn my place in this Divine Realm."
"Back then, my little sister really looked up to me. She'd follow me everywhere I went."
"It's just that she was born prematurely and was frail, unlike me. She couldn't become a Knight, but influenced by me, she longed to be one. So, she wouldn't be looked down upon, or perhaps to embolden herself, she used to dress up really oddly, just like you, Dorothy."
The Centaur Lady laughed as she looked at the little witch's flamboyant hair and the exaggerated makeup.
"I don't, my makeup is like this for a special reason," Dorothy defended herself, slightly protesting.
"Alright, alright, I get you. You're probably attending school nearby, right? If you ever run into trouble, I've got your back," the Centaur Lady said, employing a head-pat maneuver on the homebody witch.
"Don't let my current look fool you—I still have some clout in the Thirteen-Ring area," Nina declared, thumping her chest amid the tumultuous waves.
With one glance, she saw through the feeble magic power aura surrounding the little witch in front of her, merely around thirty thousand Mana. That might make one a person of note in the netherworld, but here in the Witch's Divine Realm, a little witch like that was truly just an ordinary person.
Luckily, after so many years of struggle in the Witch's Divine Realm, Nina had long stopped naively believing that all witches were deities. She now clearly understood that only the powerful witches could be considered deities, while the weaker witches and those from the Exotic Races who toiled to find their fortune here were not much different from each other.
In the Witch Academy, the hierarchy was well-defined, only the witch students of the Central Ring Area were deemed worthy of ascending to godhood, while ordinary little witches from the Thirteen-Ring like Dorothy sometimes didn't even live as comfortably as those from the Exotic Races.
The more Nina understood about witches, the clearer it became to her that even the most powerful witches, at heart, were still human. Being human, they had grudges and bitter rivalries, they bullied the weak, engaged in all sorts of social climbing, and subjected others to bullying and humiliation...
So, in Nina's view, this little witch named Dorothy was probably like her own sister, deliberately dressing up unimpressively, looking bizarre, but it was really just a protective camouflage.
This little one had been hesitating outside the shop for half a day, probably because of a bet with a classmate or something, betting she would make a round in this store if she lost.
Having seen quite a few little witches like this one over the years, and because this little witch truly reminded her of her sister whom she hadn't seen for a long time, Nina readily gave her a hand, saving her from being laughed at by her classmates upon returning.
But this little witch was actually quite agreeable, talking to her was genuinely enjoyable. Today, it seemed like the little witch got a freebie from her, but in reality, it was the other way around – she had found a witch to keep her company for drinks, after being used to accompany others day after day. Not a bad deal at all.
Sigh, she really must have been tired recently. It had been almost ten years since she had left home, and her sister had probably grown into a young lady by now. Thinking back, she had fantasized about obtaining the Divine Medicine from the witches to cure her sister's illness, enabling her dream of becoming a Knight.
Only if...
Recalling her own years of hitting walls and being tricked in the Witch World, only to luckily end up taken in by the store manager where she found refuge, Nina sighed.
The sharpness of the once-gifted Centaur Race had been worn down by reality. In the blink of an eye, she was close to 30 years old. If she were still in her race, she would be expected to marry and have children by that age, but now, she had accomplished nothing, not even finding a partner after all these years.
She was probably really too lonely, otherwise she wouldn't have inexplicably let Dorothy, the little witch, sit on her back today. Normally, a Centaur's back wasn't to be mounted casually, and this was the first time she had allowed someone else to ride her.
Although Centaurs could live for 200 years, she could almost see the end of her life. But looking at the little witch opposite her, the eyes behind those glasses were still filled with light.
Indeed, after all, witches are of the Golden Kind. Dorothy, still so young, might seem ordinary now, but she had an endless future ahead of her.
Yes, that's truly wonderful.
"Sigh, I really envy you witches, at least you still have hope,"
Nina may have been a bit drunk as she heaved a sigh and murmured to herself.
Dorothy: "..."
Watching Miss Nina suddenly become somewhat despondent, the homebody witch scratched her head, her keen senses sharply aware of the other's emotional downturn, but she didn't know how to offer comfort.
Just as she was struggling with whether she should help the Centaur Lady sober up, there was a smack, and a figure suddenly burst through the barrier around the seat and charged in.
"Nina, I heard you let another witch ride you, even though you're predestined to be my Servant Army," the intruder shouted angrily upon entry.
It was a witch who had burst in, roaring with such fury.
Dorothy: "....."
