The position of official husband meant that no matter what happened, the wife could not divorce him. Even the secondary husband did not have this right, after all a secondary mer was also a concubine no matter how many powers he had.

The reason she is doing this is to make sure that Yu Tong will be pushed into a corner and once she gets married to Murong Si then Second Aunt will think that she can do this the second time as well and the third time, until all the official posts are filled and Brother Hanjing is only left with the position of bed servant."

Yu Dong’s words caused the entire family to turn silent because they knew what she was saying was correct once Second Madam Yu got what she wanted then she would start believing that she could do this thing again and over again.

"Lowering our heads once will means that we have given the chance to Madam Yu to get even more emboldened, stopping her plan from succeeding before it can bring any sort of fruition, is a much better strategy," Yu Dong stated. She knew that there was a chance that they could break the engagement but she had asked Mammy Lin to investigate the situation of the Murong village.

And it was far worse than she had expected. The people of the Murong village were simply inhuman, they still believed in the old-school laws. That guided them to kill any mer who lost his virtue or reputation, without giving him a chance to survive. This was something that Mammy Lin told her after she returned from the village while Gu Ke Jin stayed behind to investigate further.

Mammy Lin also told her that any mer who lost his reputation would be pushed inside a cage and would be left to die after being thrown in the river that flowed in the village. Though it had slowly dried up now, the villagers hadn’t changed their ways, now they left the mers who lost their reputation to die most inhumanly.

They cut their limbs and threw them in the forest that was closest to the village. With the drought getting serious day by day, the wild animals were slowly moving out of the deeper side of the forest in search of meals.

By throwing those mers whose engagements were broken or those who were returned, not only the people of the Murong village were carrying out their old school laws but they were also protecting themselves.

It was not a wonder that Murong Si came to look for Yu Tong. He must be worried that if Yu Tong refused to come to his house on the day of his wedding he would be killed in the same manner as others, if she was in his shoes, she too would have done the same thing.

If she broke the engagement then Yu Dong was worried that they would have to carry the blame for killing a mer who had done nothing wrong. However she also didn’t want Yu Tong to suffer, this was why the only way to solve this problem was to make sure that Lin Hanjing was married off to Yu Tong, at least that way Second Madam Yu would stop the chaotic plans that she held in her head.

More importantly, Yu Dong had a feeling that the reason why Second Aunt Yu was trying to get Yu Tong married had something to do with her.

Though Mammy Lin couldn’t dig deeper as she was old and needed some rest, she found out that Old Madam Murong was more excited about having Yu Dong as her in-law rather than Yu Tong as her daughter-in-law.

’It is tough to be so popular,’ Yu Dong thought with a helpless sigh in her heart.

"But I don’t think that Brother Hanjing will agree," said Xiao Hua causing Yu Dong to snap out of her thoughts as she turned to look at him and then said with a soft smile, "Then it only means that he deserves to suffer."

"Dong Dong, you——"

"Xiao Hua. Do you know how I was able to make this big family survive? To bring them all here where anyone would think twice before offending them?" Yu Dong cut him off sternly. She looked into Xiao Hua’s eyes with a serious expression and then continued, "The reason I was able to bring this family to the position where it is now, is by taking risks.

If I had stayed locked up inside my room, thinking that my life was done for after I overdosed on Happy powder then I would be still where I was a year and a half ago."

"Happiness doesn’t come to you if you sit and wait for it, you need to work for it. If your brother Hanjing cannot even take the first step and brave his own fears, then what right does he have to make Yu Tong wait for him? If she is willing to fight her own mother and family for him, the least he can do is stand alongside her even if he cannot fight along!"
