Chapter 210 Islands within islands

Chapter 210 Islands within islands

The main island's size was so incredibly huge that Uriel wondered how was it possible that no one noticed the existence of such an underground structure in the past. If his theory was true and they were indeed beneath the Alamo then someone must have noticed it before, especially considering the many coal and gold mines in the surroundings. The group made their way through endless waves of enemies and there were so many flux orbs in the ground they didn't bother picking them up unless they were of the monster rank. Even if they wanted to, they couldn't carry as many.

"Geez! This is such a waste of credits." Nika pouted.

"Yeah, we should have brought a cart or something to carry them." Sam nodded in agreement.

"Do you think we would have been able to make it this far while pulling a cart?" Medusa asked thinking back on the iron butterflies she faced. Had it not been for her trait, they would have been in serious danger even with a holy rank hunter by their side.

Uriel remained silent most of the trip, not just because of the extenuating fights that broke out whenever cryptids appeared, but also because he had a strange feeling about the place. Even if the main island was bigger than a megacity, they've been walking for over twelve hours and the rainbow remained distant.

For a minute, he even considered it might be a regular rainbow and no matter how much they walked they wouldn't get any closer to it but he soon dismissed the idea and decided to ask Sam's opinion.

"Are we any closer to the rainbow?"

"I can't say for sure, it's pretty far in the distance and there's no landmarks to go by." Sam shrugged his shoulders.

"Alright, I think this is as far as we go for today, let's set a camp." Uriel said as he sat on the ground. His party, while excited to reach their destiny, were also relieved at the chance of getting some rest but Ethan wasn't thrilled about it. Not because he thought it was a bad idea, but because he was accustomed to be the one calling the shots.

"Keep walking, civilian!" He shouted.

"Shut up, would you? I'm trying to sleep." Uriel laid on his back and covered his face with Jon's Fedora hat.

"You insubordinate little shit," Ethan grinned. "I'm in charge of this expedition and I command you to..."

"No one is stopping you from leaving, just leave us alone."

Ethan gazed at Uriel's party, Medusa was rubbing her hands in front of the fire they just made in anticipation of a well deserved cup of Cheeky chicken while Nika held Luna on her arms like a doll and Sam made conversation with Janett. They all looked like they were on a camping trip rather than a dangerous expedition.

On the other hand, his soldiers wore blank expressions with dejected eyes, most of them were rubbing their sore muscles. They looked as though they were the last at the DMV line but no one could blame them, after so much effort their goal didn't seem to get any closer.

"Fine, I guess I'll need to follow my duty and protect the civilians." Ethan said with a tone of voice that annoyed Uriel, though not enough to keep him awake for long.

The soldiers made a perimeter and were ordered to shoot on sight which was the cause of a commotion that woke Uriel up after a short nap.

"Don't do it!" Medusa cried.

"I'm just following orders." Lieutenant Frostbite shrugged and pointed his rifle towards a small pixiephant that was happily prancing around.

"But it's so cute and harmless!" Medusa's eyes glimmered brightly as she was about to activate her trait, but a smug appeared on the man's face when he noticed it.

"Are you seriously going to break the agreement just to protect a worthless cryptid?"

"I-I will." She said with a very uncharacteristic stutter.

"What's all this about?" Uriel asked as he got up but it was too late as the sound of a gunshot startled everyone.

"Got it!" Frostbite celebrated his perfect shot at the small cryptid that was now lying on his side.

"Uhm, you shouldn't have done that." Luna said as she walked in. Then a horrid sound, similar to a deflating balloon but a hundred times louder, came off from the wounded cryptid. What followed, could only be described as a stampede of cryptids coming their way.

"Uncle Jon warned me about this, they can call for reinforcements." Medusa sighed.

"Why didn't you say so before? It's not my fault I was just following orders!" Lieutenant Frostbite said while retreating to inform the colonel.

"Stupid orders followed by an idiot." Uriel gritted his teeth and summoned his revolver.

Sounds of gunshots and traits being activated, followed by pained yelps from creatures at the distance filled the scene as they tried to defeat as many cryptids they could before they reached their location.

Medusa's trait was strong enough to disable any beast and monster rank cryptid in a second, but depending on the creature's resistance it could take anything from a couple seconds to a full minute to be effective and only one cryptid at a time.

Because of that, only Nika, Uriel and Sam were truly helpful as they were the only ones with ranged weapons. However, the true mvp of their party was Sam, whose trait allowed him to have perfect aim and he was still in possession of what used to be Mark's intermediate rifle.

"Everyone, fall back!" Ethan shouted, though there was no place to retreat other than to each other's back.

"Focus fire!" Uriel said pointing at the direction they came from initially. Instead of standing their ground, Uriel's party tried to make their way through the stampede. "This are the island within islands Crockett mentioned!"

A smile was drawn on his face as he figured out the reason why they couldn't reach the rainbow thanks to the incoming cryptids.
