Chapter 206 Swallow wife
Chapter 206 Swallow wife
"Wow! You clean up good." Nika gasped at the sight of Sam dressed in brand new clothes provided by Uriel. His hair was combed back and he was wearing perfume, he was also carrying a bouquet of roses, in short, he was ready for a date. "You look really handsome, go get her tiger!"
"Stop making fun of me Miss Nika!" Sam said blushing up to his ears.
"Don't call me Miss, I'm only a couple years older than you guys." Nika replied offended, though no one but Uriel really believed her. She had that kind of adult look and mature charm that made the rest of them seem like highschoolers.
"Anyway, you have to go now Sam or you'll miss the chance."
"Maybe this isn't such a good idea."
"Don't tell me you're having second thoughts?" Uriel asked.
"Well, at first I was completely fine with it, but have you seen the swallow chief? That dude is huge! I'm not so sure I want to flirt with his wife anymore."
"Don't worry about that. They'll only exile us."
"You say that, but are you absolutely certain that they won't attack the one who tries something with his wife?" Sam asked worriedly, though Uriel pretended not to hear him and nudged Sam towards the swallow chief's wife.
It was, of course, the first air spirit they met, the woman with long black feathers and perfect body proportions. Just looking at her made every soldier go crazy, though she never joined the rest of her flock in seducing them and Uriel discovered the reason for that.
In every primitive society emerged the religious thought, usually to explain nature phenomenons but other times it was to preserve the tribe. In the case of air spirit people it was the latter, in other words, she was a priestess.
Sam walked towards the tall angelical woman with the bouquet in one hand, adjusted the collar of his brand new shirt and gulped down a lump of saliva before speaking to her.
"Excuse me, I would like to know if you may be interested in having a date with me." Sam said with a shy look that made him look more cute than handsome and the woman replied by tilting her head to one side. While it was true that the air spirit people could understand human speech, it didn't mean they could understand their ways or the intention behind their words.
Sam extended the flowers towards her and only then did she understand, or at least that's what it seemed when she graciously accepted Sam's offering with a gentle smile and then proceeded to eat a petal and she seemed really happy. She nodded at Sam with an excited look on her face and then she offered him one of the flowers.
Sam didn't know how to respond to the awkward situation and was starting to panic, but then he saw Luna waving a sign with Uriel's handwriting at the distance. It was the only way they thought of to communicate with Sam at the distance without interrupting the scene. Experience new stories on My Virtual Library Empire
'She wants to share food, that counts as a date.'
"Oh dear, what did I get myself into." Sam muttered before accepting the flower the swallow chief's wife offered under her expecting gaze leaving him with no choice but to awkwardly chew on the petal.
Sam spent the rest of the day trying to ingratiate himself with the beautiful air spirit, but given the difference in cultures he only made a fool of himself in front of everyone.
In the meantime, Uriel kept studying the columns at the center of the town trying to find the correct one in the very likely case than Sam failed on his endeavor.
There were eight different marble columns that drew a ring around the swallow Chief's throne, each of the columns depicted a different animal: Bear, eagle, snake, alligator, elk, buffalo, crane and lynx.
"Any progress?" Nika appeared out of his shadow while he studied the marble poles.
"These totems are weird." Uriel muttered under his breath, seemingly ignoring Nika.
"Not as weird as Sam trying to seduce that bird. If you want to see his latest embarrassment, you can go watch his ritual mating dance?"
"Ritual mating dance? Where did he get that idea from?"
"He's that desperate." Nika shrugged her shoulders. Uriel was focused on his, albeit unfruitful, interesting research. Nevertheless, he wasn't that absorbed on it as to let such an opportunity to get ammunition to mock Sam in the future pass. However, at that precise moment the noise of many people complaining was heard.
"Hey! Watch it!" Lieutenant Frostbite grunted as he was being pushed by an eagle-like man.
Every human present was being pushed towards the column formation, even the now awake Shaker along with Luna and Janett. Air spirits remained just outside the column formation to keep people from entering, though they were all pointed towards the throne.
"What's going on?" Nika asked.
"Beats me, but I don't see Sam anywhere." Uriel had a gut feeling telling him that whatever happened it was related to his friend.
"Someone save me!" Sam was being escorted by two tall men inside the circle and towards the throne where the swallow Chief was already waiting with the swallow woman at the side of the throne.
"He did it!?" Nika gasped.
"Uhm, no. He was dancing like an idiot, then the woman went from smiling to serious and took off." Luna explained.
"Please, if I did anything to offend you, forgive me!" Sam prostrated himself in front of the swallow Chief who scowled at him and all the air spirit people began twittering loudly. The hulking figure of swallow Chief then stood up and silence was made, he then turned to the swallow woman and nodded.
She ceremoniously walked towards Sam and grabbed his hand to help him stand up and then gestured for Sam to look at the swallow Chief directly. It looked like a primitive trial where all the humans were forced to remain outside the ring of columns as witnesses.
Uriel was torn in between his sense of duty that compelled him to do something to save his friend and his passion for archaeology and primitive cultures that made him want to see how things developed without intervening but in the end, he knew he didn't stand a chance against the air spirit people even if everyone cooperated.
