Chapter 169 You give friendship a bad name Part 3
Uriel finally understood why Medusa never told them her name, why she knew about Atlantis when it should have been a well kept secret and also, why she was engaged to Sam, but there was something odd about her last statement.
"That doesn't make any sense. Why would you need to go back to save my life?"
"I thought you were captured because they thought we had a relationship. If that was the case I feared they would do bad things to you in order to get to me."
"You said you were pretending to be a couple. Does that mean you're not actually a together?"
"Of course not, you silly!" Medusa couldn't stop crying.
"But Sam..." Uriel didn't get to ask the question.
"I only agreed to doing this because Medusa was my friend before I found out she came from the Works family. There's no way in hell I'm dating anyone related to those assholes."
"It's not ok to say mean things about your girlfriend's family, even if she's a mean person that says mean things." Luna scolded Sam.
"It's ok, Luna, I think they're assholes too." Medusa wiped a tear from her eyes and hugged Luna as she couldn't endure the pain any longer. "I'm sorry I said mean things about you during our last incursion, I've missed you so much all this time."
"Uhm... Breathe... I need air." Luna spoke while being squished against Medusa's chest.
Uriel and Sam stood idly by as the scene unfolded and, for a brief second, they hesitated on whether they should hug too but they cringed at the thought. Instead, they extended their arms and shook hands awkwardly.
"So, the reason I had to act like a jerk to you was to make sure everyone knew Medusa is now my 'girlfriend' and that she doesn't have any feelings for... anyone else." Sam explained the reason why he challenged him in front of everyone, though he made sure not to address the elephant in the room which was that Medusa had feelings for Uriel.
"If I didn't do it like that, we wouldn't be able to continue studying here and even if we were, we wouldn't be able to be friends anymore."
"You were being a jerk? I thought you were being brave, it was so weird I almost thought you were a skinwalker." They both laughed merrily at the joke for a few seconds, but then Uriel suddenly stopped laughing, took a silver crucifix from his pocket and touched him with it to confirm he was the real Sam.
"So, where do we stand now?" Medusa finally asked.
"I mean... It's not like I can simply forget you used your petrifying glare on me like it was nothing."
"But I did it in order to protect you!" Medusa was about to start crying again and she clung to Luna even tighter.
"I think we can leave that discussion for another day." Uriel sighed.
"You don't mind if we act like a couple?" Medusa asked shyly.
"Or if we act like jerks?" Sam added.
"As long as you don't take it too far, I don't care." Uriel shrugged. After all, as long as he knew they were his true friends he didn't care if they acted like jerks in front of other people but Medusa interpreted his words differently.
"I promise I won't! I'm saving my first time for someone special." She blushed up heavily and cupped up her cheeks.
"Since we can't let people think we're friends we should take our distance for a while. No texting either because I doubt the Mapple corporation would have any regards for privacy and they'll most likely bug your phones. We can meet up during the weekends on the old factory."
"I think so to, there's a lot we need to figure out. By pretending we're a couple we are buying time, but it doesn't make our engagement any less real. The only way we can get out of it is if we find a way to break free from our families. Is the offer to go with you to a dungeon still standing?" Sam asked. "If we got our hands in some orichalcum we may as well disown ourselves."
"Of course the offer is still up, I'll be more than happy to go with you guys but... I lost David Crockett's diary."
"I know, Jon Hunter took it from you. I did some digging and it turns out there really is a dungeon beneath the Alamo. Not just that, my family has invested heavily into opening it but so far they only found one of the relics to open it." Medusa explained.
"What kind of relic is it? Where did they find it?" Uriel's curiosity was piqued.
"It was the hatchet the statue of David Crockett was holding. Apparently, the sculptures in the basement were entity level cryptids called living statues, but the woman's statue was actually a horror rank cryptid."
"Well, I found one of the relics too. It was on a pit near Hunters lane in the north. Do you think it's possible for us to find the last one?"
"I don't think so, even if we knew where it was it's not safe to go outside. Apparently, the cryptids nearby have been acting strange after Jon obtained the hatchet."
"Uhm... I have an idea." Luna said but then fell silent in the most annoying way possible.
"Luna!" Her friends shouted in unison.
"Yes... I think we should focus into our studies until the last relic is found."
"How does that solve anything?" Uriel couldn't say if Luna was being serious or not. The search for the relics that opened the dungeon was a race and he couldn't fathom how would wasting their time in college could be of any use.
"It's simple. They won't be able to open the dungeon without all three relics. We let them... uhm... find the remaining one and only then discuss our terms."
Luna's reasoning was spot on. It didn't matter who had one or two relics, without all three of them the entrance would most likely remain shut.
Your journey continues with My Virtual Library Empire
"What you're saying is, we use the relic as a bargaining chip!" Medusa cheerfully exclaimed and her face lit up. Though Uriel wasn't fond of the idea of parting from his comanche war bonnet even if it was to enter a dungeon.
After saying their goodbyes, everyone went their own way but Uriel, who remained alone in the classroom in silence.
"Hey, freeloader!"
"Yes?" Nika poked her head out from his shadow, only to be greeted with a bump in the head.
"You heard everything. Like it or not, you're part of our team now."
