Chapter 164 Teacher's pet
After her brief introduction Nika took everyone to their new classroom. It was nothing like Pangeotis' lecture hall but, given the small amount of students, it was more than enough. Students chose seats to their liking and, oddly enough, male students fought over the first row seats.
Nika stood awkwardly in front of everyone without knowing what to do, it was her first time giving a lecture and she had no idea on how to start a class.
"Any questions?"
"Professor Nika, how can we have any questions if you haven't started your lesson yet."
"So, no questions. That's good." She nodded.
Uriel couldn't think of anyone less qualified to teach, no matter how much he wanted to giver her the benefit of the doubt, Nika just wasn't cooperating.
"What is the most important thing to have in mind when fighting?"
"Your rank!" Said one student in the front row.
"Weapons!" Said another.
"Don't be stupid, the most important thing is to have a lightsource, everyone knows cryptids are too troublesome to deal with in complete darkness." A girl with a know it all attitude said.
"Wrong, wrong, wrong. Sage, come here." She gestured him to come using her index finger in a seductive manner, triggering everyone male student's envy, though he would have much preferred to stay as far away from her as possible.
"Dude what are you waiting for, don't keep her waiting!" Someone nudged him on the ribs a bit too forcefully.
"Yes..." Uriel said disgruntledly as he stood up and stepped right besides her.
"Tell everyone what's the answer."
"To know your opponent." Uriel replied, though all he wanted was to shrink in his own skin.
"Precisely, you don't fight the same way against the different rank cryptids. What would you do against a beast rank opponent?"
"Kill it swiftly before it calls for help."
"Correct, beast rank cryptids usually hunt in packs or hordes. How do you deal with monster rank cryptids?"
"Assess the situation and either fight them with the help of my party or escape."
"Excellent, monster rank cryptids are usually stronger than a single ascended. Now tell me, what do you do when you're fighting another human?" Nika asked thinking that Uriel wouldn't know the answer.
Ever since she moved in with Uriel, they had been training together on a daily basis which is why she wanted to use him as an example. Though they never talked much and she wasn't aware that Uriel already killed a human being.
"I would avoid it at all costs, people are the most troublesome opponents. But if they force my hand, I would make damn sure I'm the last man standing."
"C-Correct again. This is what an A+ student looks like, everyone! Now go to your seat." She said after patting him on the back. "You are all ascended, you can't jump to action just because you can. You need to understand your situation better. Having a light source is important against cryptids, but it can be a disadvantage when fighting other hunters.
Having a weapon is also a good thing but choosing your opponent is way more important." Nika's words seemed deep, though it was only basic knowledge anyone with at least a bit of hunting experience should know.
"Miss Nika, why would we fight against other hunters?" The know it all girl asked and most students nodded at her, making it clear that they didn't possess any sort of real life experience.
"Sorry, I already asked if there were any questions, the time for questions is up." She shrugged. "Now grab a sheet of paper and a pen."
"No way! A test!" Some students complained, but the know it all girl reassured everyone.
"It can't be a test, we haven't learned anything yet."
"Oh! But it is a test and if you haven't learned anything today, then you're in the wrong classroom. I'm not afraid of failing worthless students."
While it was true that most male students chose Nika as her tutor because they thought she was pretty, the rest of them chose her because of her carefree attitude that made them think her class would be the easiest.
"I want everyone to write the your name and the name of the person you would like to face in combat, after that we'll be holding a 'friendly' competition outside. Since you don't know each other yet I want everyone to stand up and say your name out loud in order."
The students were beyond flabbergasted to say the least, including Uriel, no one had ever been in a course as strange as this nor had a teacher as eccentric as Nika. Even though most of them didn't agree with her teaching methods, no one wanted to risk getting failed before the course even started and they promptly began writing the name of the opponent they wanted to face.
Nika received all the pieces of paper and started reading them out loud. Discover hidden tales at My Virtual Library Empire
"Sage, Sage, Sage, Sage, Sage..." The list was long and monotone, everyone wanted to fight against Uriel except for one person, which was Uriel himself. "That's it, everyone wants to face against Sage, except him who apparently wants to fight against me."
At that moment, Uriel finally understood why she showed favoritism towards him. He also understood why did she made sure to make him stand in front of everyone and said his nickname out loud. She wanted to stage things so everyone would choose him as their opponent, that was clear, but something troubled him.
"Hey Moonlight... you too?" He asked, feeling betrayed by her short friend.
"Uhm... I- don't know anybody else." She kept her gaze low and held on tightly to Mr. Wabbit in a shy manner, though her facial expression remained the same.
With that done, Nika asked everyone to follow her outside the classroom towards an open space.
"Traits and weapons aren't allowed. The objective is to land a hit anywhere, the first blow will count as a victory. Come here Sage, I'll try not to hurt you too much so you can face your new classmates."
"Why are you doing this?" He asked Nika in a whisper.
"Tsh, you'll get it soon enough." She replied to him and then addressed the whole class. "Try to learn as much as you can. I'll give a single lesson after each combat and I hope you engrave them in your minds, hopefully the pain will help with that." She put on a wicked smile to her face and took a battle stance.
