Chapter 1814 Interrogation?
The tense atmosphere shrouded the frontier, the win against the army of the void creature did not change anything within the frontier as the celebration was cut short. The news of the Imperial Investigator made the tense atmosphere worse.
The outsider might not know the Imperial Investigator, but the soldiers knew what it meant if the Imperial Investigator was here. The better scenario was just corruption within the army, but the worst scenario was that some betrayed the kingdom to join the Void Cult. The thought one of them betrayed their own kingdom caused the gripping atmosphere in the frontier.
It had been a few days since the Imperial Investigator, and yet there was still no announcement. If there was a traitor among them, the Void Cult had the most important information about them, meaning the next war would be much worse than the previous one.
Captain Atkins and Captain Rainer walked side by side and noticed the changed atmosphere in the last few days. The two were headed toward the administrator's lodging as they received the command to pick Tang Shaoyang up to meet the Imperial Investigator.
The two received the tasks because they had a short interaction with Tang Shaoyang. The lodging was in sight, and the two saw Tang Shaoyang in front of the building as if he were waiting for them.
"Good evening, Sir." Both were respectful and polite as this was an official duty. "For the investigation within the Hurakan Legion, the Imperial Investigation asks you for an interview. Are you available right now, Sir?"
"Yes, just me, or do you want my team to tag along?" Tang Shaoyang nodded.
"Only you for now, Sir. We will guide you to meet the Imperial Investigator." Captain Atkins bowed once more. He did not understand why the administrators were summoned for an interview when the Hurakan Legion was investigated. He heard some rumor that it was about the corruption in the higher-ups, nothing serious, especially not about the traitor within them.
However, his mouth was sealed, they could not speculate or make a rumor until the Imperial Investigator announced the result of the investigation.
Captain Atkins and Captain Rainer guided the administrator. The two made sure that they were ahead of Tang Shaoyang, not behind or flanking him so it was not like they were escorting a prisoner. Tang Shaoyang earned their respect after everything he did so far, killing the Battle King and taking the frontline during the first battle against the army.
The two captains were disturbed when they received the command to pick up Tang Shaoyang for an interview. They felt like Tang Shaoyang did not deserve this for what he did. Whether it was formality or not, Tang Shaoyang was on their side, contributing more than the Hurakan Legion when it came to fighting the Void Cult.
"Do you know why I got interviewed?" Tang Shaoyang asked, out of curiosity. He knew both captains would not tell him, but it was worth a shot.
"We don't know, Sir. We can't say anything even if we know something." Captain Atkins replied.
Tang Shaoyang nodded understandingly, and they continued the trip in silence. No one said a word afterward, and they arrived at the same place where he had a meeting with Commander Edson. Rainer stayed outside while Atkins entered the building together with him.
Atkins led him to a different room than the meeting room. They stopped at the door. "The Imperial Investigators are inside, Sir. This is where we will part ways." He then bowed his head once more.
Tang Shaoyang nodded and opened the door. As soon as he entered the room, he frowned. It was a smaller room, maybe an office before the Imperial Investigator turned this place into an interrogation room. He said an interrogation room because there was only one square table inside with two chairs, nothing else.
Three individuals were waiting for him inside. They were wearing a black and gold robes with a sword facing upward symbol in red. One of them was sitting on the chair, and the other two stood behind. Their faces were hidden behind masks.
The mask on the chair looked up at Tang Shaoyang, "Please sit." He gestured to the chair across from him. The masked person in the chair was a man based on his voice.
Tang Shaoyang closed the door and decided to follow their rule. He did not like this because it felt like he was a suspect being interrogated.
The masked man took out a crystal ball and put it on the table between them. "Our conversation will be recorded, and the interview will start now."
"Are you Senior Administrator Tang Shaoyang?" the man continued with the first question. "Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I have a skill that can detect lies. Be careful with your answer, Senior Administrator Tang Shaoyang."
"Yes." Tang Shaoyang replied with one word.
"Is it true it's not a long time since you became an administrator? Can you tell us the exact date?" The Imperial Investigator continued. The first few questions were more like a background check.
The Imperial Investigator seemed satisfied with the answer as he nodded approvingly. "You haven't told me a single lie so far. That's a good start. Let's start with the real question since you look annoyed already."
"I have heard about your weird skills from Commander Edson, and I have heard from Commander Edson that you refused to help the Hurakan Legion with your skills. May I know why?"
Tang Shaoyang furrowed his brow as this was different from what Atilla told him about the interview. She said it was just a formality, but the question got too personal.
"May I know why you are interrogating me?" He replied with a question. This was no longer an interview, an interrogation. That was what he felt right now.
"You are here being questioned, not to ask the question!" A cold voice rang in the room.
Tang Shaoyang looked toward where the voice came from. The robed man to his right who was standing. He looked up at the man. "And I want to know why I am being questioned! Don't try to fool me because I know what your job is, and I am not part of your kingdom. Your authority is limited only to your people, and I can refuse this one-sided interrogation."
The seated Imperial Investigator raised his hand to stop his team from continuing the argument. The man looked at Tang Shaoyang and answered. "We have a suspicion that you might work under the Void Cult. Or else there's no reason for you to refuse Commander Edson's request that will help us win the war against the Void Cult."
"There's no reason to refuse?" Tang Shaoyang broke into a chuckle. "If you have spoken to Commander Edson, then you should know why I refuse the request. Do you want me to trust your people after one of your generals tried to conspire against me?"
He sometimes wondered how people could be this shameless unless Commander Edson did not tell them the full details of the incident before that. However, he believed that Commander Edson was not that kind of person despite their disagreement in the previous meeting.
"It's just a suspicion, Senior Administrator Tang Shaoyang. That's why I need you to answer my question so I can tell whether you are lying to us or not. Avoiding the question will not help your situation." The Imperial Investigator continued calmly.
Tang Shaoyang felt like he could not bottle it anymore. He was angry inside that these people were suspicious of him after everything he did. He killed one of the kings, even though it was an accident as he did not know the person was a king. Nevertheless, he still killed a king, and then he used his army in the last fight, helping the frontier to avoid the crisis. It could be said that he used more than half of his card for people to see, and yet these people are still suspicious of him.
Then he remembered the words from the Corrupted Immortal Emperor, the former Executive Administrator. The former Executive Administrator said that he was being cornered which forced him to join the Void Cult, that was what the emperor implied back then.
Maybe this is the kind of situation that the former Executive Administrator mentioned. He fought with them, and killed a lot of their enemies together, even the leader, and yet they were still suspicious of him just because he refused to share his skill. It made him angrier because he left his home for this, he left his family for this, he left his daughter to be here, and they still suspected that he was on the Void Cult's side. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became.
[Then don't think about it! Don't think and ignore them. It's unwise if you act out of impulse and attack them. From what we heard, this Hurakan Kingdom is the top dog of the God Realm. You don't want another enemy on your plate with what you have right now.] Avyn's soothing voice resonated in his head, and that calmed him.
"I think it's better if I return to the Administrator Space with my team if you are still suspicious after what I did so far." Tang Shaoyang raised his finger, stopping the Imperial Investigator from cutting his words.
"I am still lacking in self-control, and I am afraid that I will do something that puts us in a tough spot if I keep receiving such treatment from the people I help. I am not trying to run or escape but this might be the best for us. My patience is running out!"
